Hi! In desparate need of advice.
I have a nine month old guinea pig who experiences vaginal bleeding.
It occurs immediately after the end of a 'bad' season when she is extra hormonal, it is fresh blood, a few drops, it stops and starts and usually ends within two days. It's happened four times now in this exact pattern. I am aware that this is very much not normal, we have seen five vets now, all with different opinions. UTI and bladder stones have been ruled out, we suspected ovarian cysts or tumours, however after a ultrasound scan the vet assured us that nothing is amiss inside. This leaves us totally lost! I have read some old posts on this forum that say rarely pigs can spot during or after their seasons. I have considered the possibility of spraying her but she shows no signs of discomfort, plays, eats, poops drinks etc completely normally so I am hesitant to put her through the operation. Could it be a hormonal issue?
Has anyone had any experiences with anything similar? Any advice or help would be very appreciated, thanks :)

How has her weight been? Does she appear to be in pain when toileting? I’ve not much experience with this but it is certainly not normal.

Hopefully someone with more experience will be along soon to answer more comprehensively.

It surprises me she doesn't have ovarian cysts and that reproductive system looked normal. Is it definitely not in her wee? And are you seeing a vet that knows piggies?

Hey thanks for your reply, she is absolutely fine when going to the toilet, no signs of pain, no blood in her wee and she is a healthy stable weight too

It is most definitely not in her wee, we haven't seen an exotic vet, our location is very remote, the nearest is almost three hours away but we have seen five different vets at this point, the recent scan was done by a 'scan specialist' who travels between clinics, she observed some bladder sludge but nothing that could cause this

I assume they scanned the reproductive system too?

Yes that was the main intention of the scan, they checked her intensities, bladder etc as a precaution since they found no cysts or tumours

Extra dandelions made my boy Finn to pee red pee in the past. I wonder if you are feeding extra dandelion.

Hi! No we aren't feeding dandelions at all, they have them VERY occasionally as a treat, thanks for the reply :)

How odd they found nothing. If it's not in her urine, it's not what may be up with my piggie (she's also a bit of a mystery). If you do op for a spay I would definitely make sure it's with a vet who is confident, and used to doing piggies

I thought the same, we have been so desperate for answers, oh bless her what symptoms is she showing?
She's been crying when weeing for months. But how often is variable but nearly everyday. We've had blood in her urine but that stopped with glucosamine. But pain still there. She's on gabepentin, metacam and glucosamine. She's had 2 x-rays, an ultrasound all showed absolutely nothing. Bladder lining looks fine. She's had urine tests, 2 lots of antibiotics too. She does have a couple of smaller ovarian cysts but vet doesn't think it should cause these symptoms. We are currently trialling cartophen which can treat sterile cysistis but vet doesn't actually think she has it because her bladder lining is normal.

Poor girl, I hope you get some answers soon and that the cartophen works! It's so stressful, we're thinking of trying sunny on another round of antibiotics just to see if it could be a chronic UTI but we are doubtful since the blood isn't in her wee! Fingers crossed for both our babies

If you do I would try a different antibiotic if you can. But it does sound unlikely. It is very stressful. I've been debating on having Nancy put to sleep at times. I was up in the night she was in a lot of pain. There's also the risk to her kidneys now with all the medication 😥

I'm so sorry 😔 as owners we just have to trust our gut and keep them comfortable, maybe put a hot water bottle under her bed as the warmth may ease her discomfort a bit. we are fortunate that sunny doesn't seem to be in pain, perhaps a little sore but nothing major. I will keep nancy in my thoughts<3
