Guinea Pig Urine

No.
If your piggy is not peeing, you must see a vet as an emergency.

(Or is this another hypothetical question?)

So I know that guinea pig’s poop is 1-2 days behind intake. Is that the same for their pee?

Thanks!

Hi

No. It takes about an hour for any water to filter through the kidneys. As long as a piggy is eating normally and has access to drinkable water, they are not at risk of dehydrating because the need to drink comes before the need to eat.

The exceptions are: Hot weather (heat stroke), a problem with the bottle (nozzle blocked or bottle running out), the water being too hot, frozen or slimy. Major or total loss of appetite, serious respiratory infection or a blockage in the urinary tract (stone stuck somewhere). Arching when peeing is usually a sign of a problem in urinary tract.

Sorry another hypothetical question, my bad. I’ll say that next time. I could not seem to find something that said how long it took to pass through them, only how often they peed.

I am going by the human body but rehydration in guinea pigs is always fairly quick; even quicker by sub-q injections where you see first pees in about that time. Please keep in mind that this only goes for plain water (plus electrolytes if needed), which doesn't need any digestion and is just shunted towards the kidneys. Anything else (i.e. any fluid that contains nutrients) needs to go through the digestive system.

Please be aware that over-hydration is more dangerous/fatal than dehydration so you can never recommend to just squirt plenty of water down a piggy's mouth.

PS: Drink two glasses of water and see how long it takes you to make a few trips to the loo. Make sure that you are at home for the next 2-3 hours, though. ;)
