can anyone give me some info on guinea pig teeth,
i have 5 lovely piggys all of whom were unwanted pets (they are very much wanted and loved now :) ). but ive just noticed this morning when one was having a drink his top two front teeth seem massive to me and i know they have issues with there teeth. This is the first time ive kept piggys and I'm unsure of how long they should be. any help would be great.

Hiya,

One of my pigs Sunshine has quite large teeth at the front top and bottom, but when I give him good hay to chomp on you know the thicker stuff this wears them down. I'm not sure how big they should be but I go by the shorter the better. If he is eating ok then obviously its fine.

:)

Signs of problems with piggies teeth are when they are eating, they break their food down into small pieces so it is easier for them to pick up and eat. Also they pull faces (they look like they are yawning) when food gets stuck. Like Sunshine and Twinkle says if you give plenty of hay and hard veggies like carrots and broccoli stalk they should be fine. I thought I'd let you know what the signs were just in case.

yep guineas can have problems with their teeth, I have found it's more the back teeth (ones you can't easily see!) than the front ones. Like louise said if you give him/her lots of chewy hay it should help, unless he/she is having problems chewing it should be ok

piggies and teeth

mine touching wood have never had teeth problem, glynis a member on here and a fellow aussie her piggy duke has a lot of teeth problems. hoping these links help you. like said thick hay, pellets, hard food that they have to chew is a great help. unlike humans guinea pig teeth grow all the time. http://www.oginet.com/pgurney/dentalproblems.htm

hi,

do you have a pet shop close by ? i would get a wooden ball i dont know there proper name put they are suposed to be great for piggies teeth.

Hi there welcome to the forum from us both in OZ as well :)
ahhhhhh yes toofie probs i've gone thru this quite often .... as long as your piggies are eating lots of hay and good pellets you should be fine, but you can go to your local pet shop and buy these great balls etc.. in the UK and they're brilliant for toofies.
Perhaps you could go to the vets and get them to do a once over on all the piggies for peace of mind..........they could check their weight and toofies etc.. and then you'll feel better.
and by the way CONGRATS on taking care of these lucky piggies, i'm sure they all appreciate your kindness and love xoxoxoxoxoxo
Hope to hear more from you, you'll love the forum heaps of lovely people and a great place to learn.
