Hi Guinea Pig Parents,

We hope you and your little ones are doing well.

One of our guinea pig boys, Berry, has had tooth decay for a while. We took him to Goddard Veterinary Group Ewell and got him checked with an exotic vet.
The vet has said that the tooth decay could be due to kidney issues, stress or other dental problems. The only ways to diagnose as said by the vet are either a blood test or an x-ray and they need anaesthesia. The vet has also said that Berry is a four-year-old and in generally good health so she doesn't recommend putting him through anaesthesia.

She has recommended for now to keep an eye on Berry and check his weight. She suspects that his teeth might grow back again. As of now, Berry is having no problem eating, his poop is normal and he is generally being himself.

Does this sound correct or shall I consider taking a second opinion? We will be looking out at his teeth and weight but the decision for anaesthesia given his age is a difficult one. Could we get some advice on this, please?

Best wishes,

To be honest if he is eating well and not losing weight then I would leave him be. I assume you mean front teeth (the incisors) if this is the case then there is every chance that a damage tooth will grow back. He may have knocked it on something. I would see how things go. Make sure you weigh him every week and record the weight so you can see any loses over a long period of time. If he starts being fussy with his food and losing weight then go back to the vets at that point
I four year old guinea pig that is otherwise healthy should fair well under GA but there are always associated risks with any sedation

I’m glad he is ok in himself. I hope his teeth sort themselves out and no further treatment is needed 🤞🏻
