hi my 3yr old male pig has been on and off very ill lately - it started in july his teeth were misaligned and had them trimmed completely straight by the vets but of course he couldnt eat for weeks properly because he wasnt used to eating that way.
then he had a very big abscess which developed around two weeks ago the vets thought it was a tooth root abscess which it wasnt rather it was lower down his neck and connected to his carotid artery etc. so he had that cut open on the 20th the first time, but it just filled back up so they put him under to cut it open properly and remove the whole thing this monday (28/08/23) he was pretty happy before that appointment if a little uncomfortable but still eating for himself id just give him one or two meals of critical care just to make him gain some weight.
he came back from that appointment and seemed really quiet and down. he rarely eats so i give him critical care pretty much four or five times a day along with his meds of course he just isnt right. i fed him about 1:30AM today (30/08/23) and he actually seemed quite alright he was a bit more perky and when i put him back in his cage he continued to eat his hay like mad for 5min after then turned to have kale too.
then i got up today to feed him again about 7 or 8 and hes completely different his front legs (not the paws really, further up) are swollen he didnt look anything like this even when he had the abscess i dont know what it could be i was hoping for some advice?
he sees the vets in a couple hours anyway for a checkup i dont know if its worth making an emergency appointment my parents are at work i dont really like the idea of getting a bus to the vets

the responsibility of looking after him has really fallen to me lately because my summer has been entirely free and i really dont mind however I'm going to moving to uni on saturday and i really dont know what to do my parents will of course try their best but its not fair to have them put off their work all the time for these vet appointments

Aw poor piggy! It does sound like he needs to see the vet today.
This may be hard but perhaps a rescue could take your piggy on when you go to uni if your parents are unsure about keeping him on?

hi thank you for your advice, we got an emergency appointment at the vets and the vet gave him a shot of a couple things diuretic, anti-inflammatory etc.. and he acknowledged its an awkward place to have the swelling due to his struggles eating and breathing but he wasnt wholly concerned as he was basically bang on time (48 hrs) for when the swelling gets to its peak so hopefully he will get better and wee out all the fluid and as long as he had some critical care to keep his guts going he should be good.
i have discussed surrendering my guinea pigs with my parents as a last resort since we have had 7 piggies now so i do believe they can look after them normally but not when we have one in such an intensive state and what matters is whats best for him.
anyway he has another appointment at 8:30 tomorrow to have a checkup and another shot and hopefully the best will be behind us after that

Have the vets given you an anti-inflammatory painkiller to give him twice a day at home?

ive been giving him 0.4ml of loxicom (painkiller) once a day and 0.24ml of baytril (anti biotic) twice a day but i dont think loxicom is anti inflammatory no :(

Yes, loxicom is an anti inflammatory.
Piggies need their pain meds every 12 hours to be fully effective. They have a fast metabolism and once a day isn’t enough for them.
Do discuss it with your vet

Glad he's been to the vets. I agree the loxicom would be better split into two doses.
Hope he's on the mend soon - glad the vet wasn't too concerned 😊

Welcome to the forum. I hope your piggy is soon on the mend. Sending healing vibes ❤️

Last Update:
Hi thank you for the advice and welcomes just wanted to say we put Figg to rest at 8:30AM today and he can finally be in peace. While he looked alright yesterday, he mustve began to go septic at some point maybe yesterday because today he was just getting worse, came up dehydrated with a fever, incredibly laboured breathing and i couldnt get him to swallow at all i tried my best but the vet agreed there was nothing to do and id never want him to live in pain he really took a turn for the worse in 24 hours. I have been able to come to terms with the losses of my other guinea pigs over the years because theyve all had good lives living to atleast 7 for all the other five in total but this has been horrible to grieve and come to terms with.
ill miss him alot i raised him and the other boy i still have from a really young age and watched them grow up

I’m so sorry you have had to make this decision to help Figg over the bridge. You did all you could for him. Take care ❤️

Oh poor Figg. Rest in peace little man I've thr Rainbow Bridge 🌈❤️
You did everything you could x

So sorry that you had to make that tough decision for Figg but it was the last gift of love.
Be gentle with yourself as you grieve
