Hello everyone I just got my new baby guinea pig about 2 weeks ago and she lives with her big sister (2 years). I took her out with her sister tonight to spend time with them and noticed something wrong with her eye. It is a little crusty on the eyelid and she has fur loss around the inner eye and above her eye. It’s only on her right eye. Her sister does not seem to have this. (this will sound pretty stupid but it’s my first time using this and i have no clue how to add an image)

above where you write you see all those green symbols. the 5th one from the right. its a little rectangle with a mountain on it. you click that and it will tell you to drag and drop files into it. the forum is a little bit more pc friendly.

i can't really see anything wrong. i do know they make a liquid from their like tear gland i guess you could call it that they use to clean them selves with. maybe theirs a problem and its being leaky... a vet would know for sure but maybe someone else has a better answer / dealt with this.

It’s not clear from the picture. I can see the fur is flattened though. The best thing would be to have her checked by a vet. It is a good idea to have a vet check carried out in new piggy in any event.

When you hear the words hair loss and crusty skin around the face of a new piggy, then one is the first things you think of is a fungal infection (ringworm), so best to get it checked out just in case.

Let us know how you get on

I am taking her to the vet today. I will update after

Hi

It could be just some watery eye fluid (a sign of an irritation) dried to some hairs and exposing a little skin in the process. Once the transparent crust has fallen off, there should be no sign of any problems.

However, if the white crust is opaque and the area is growing fast over the coming days, then you are most likely dealing with ringworm, which is a highly contagious species jumping fungal skin infection. At this stage and from your picture, we cannot tell you what is going on but you should know in a day or two. The period between infection and acute outbreak is 10-14 days but it can happen a bit later if it is picked up from spores sitting loosely in the coat upont arrival.

Please don't be tempted to home treat on spec before you have seen your vet. It will make any diagnosis very difficult for them.
