Hi,

Last week I noticed one of my pigs was sqealing/possibly in pain when having a wee. This only lasted a day and she was fine for the next few, but it started up again. I took her to the vets who checked her over and took a sample of her wee (she said everything was fine in that department, no blood ect). I was told to give my pig 'meloxidyl'(2.5 on a tiny little sirringe-sorry not sure of what the measurement is called!). This seems to ease her pain for a while and she can pee quite happpily but it seems to soon wear off. Not really sure what to do now? Shes eating and happy most of the time (she is a bit of a bossy pig at times!). Was also advised to give her pineapple juice but finding it hard to give to her as she does not seem to like it, she will eat a piece of fruit thats dipped in it but its not really very much juice.

I'm not really sure what else can be done if her wee tested satisfactory? My little girl is rather vocal so sometimes think she is just 'wininging/squeaking' because thats her but I am overthinking everything - I just don't want her to be in pain, if she really is :(

Hi, I've just been looking up Meloxidyl as I've not come across that before.
Squeeking when peeing is usually a sign of a UTI (urinary tract infection) or a bladder stone.
UTIs are usually treated with an antibiotic e.g. Septrin and an anti inflammitary e.g. Metacam.
Meloxidyl is an anti inflammitary drug but if it is an infection I think I'm right in saying that's only going to dull the pain and not cure the problem.

You'll need to have an x-ray taken to see if it's a bladder stone.

There's further info here: http://www.guinealynx.info/uti.html

Unsweeted cranberry juice is better than pineapple.
Is the urine pink in colour? Any signs of blood in the bedding?

Is your vet experienced with guinea pigs? Where are you based? Maybe a forum member can recommend someone if not.

Hi! Thanks for your reply!

I live in portsmouth and luckily seem to have a good vet who seems to know her stuff with guinea pigs but I will defiantly go back for x-ray/antibiotics if that is what the next step is. Her wee is normal and no pinkish/blood found in her bedding.

Is cranberry juice okay with suspected bladder stones? (Due to vit c?)

Cranberry juice is for UTIs rather than bladder stones. It helps to flush bacteria out of the urinary tract. I don't think it makes any difference to bladder stones.
It's worth a try, if it's the beginning of a UTI it might make a difference.
There's not always pink wee with UTIs or stones but something to look out for.

i dont know if this goes for pigs, but when i had a UTI last year they were able to test my blood to see if my white blood cells were elevated (they were) and thats how they were able to diagnose it. so maybe if the xray doesn't show a stone you could ask for a blood test? idk, just an idea :)
