our late rosie use to sing like a bird, it was such a wonderful sound :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: it also gave me shivers listening to it but it also sounded magical :smitten:
:smitten: :smitten: do you know whether the song is more common to be sung by females or males? i really miss hearing her sing, but believe she is now singing in the clouds. 0:) 0:) 0:)

Until JML's post I had only ever heard of this phenomenon from females and actually had the privilege of hearing Rosie Pig sing to the herd one day. It was almost as if she was in a trance and all the other pigs stopped and formed a circle around her - it was an amazing spectacle and I so wished I'd had a video recorder!

My Holly sang on a wet night in her hutch to her sisters and mother. It was like a bird song. I have never heard her sing again. Her sisters appeared to be nervous about it and ran for cover in the tubes.

No-one seems to know why it happens, what it means and why a piggy might sing only once its lifetime.

If someone has a video thread of this happening I`d be grateful for it.

Anders :)

there is a video of it on you tube. We played it to our pigs. I won't spoil the surprise...... try it for yourself :D. just type in guinea pig song. You'll find it!

It's funny because I have never heard a guinea pig singing in my life before and I had my first guinea pig at 17 years old and kept quite a few in my 20's and never heard this noise but a few months ago when Iggy used to be in the kitchen in an indoor cage I heard this strange bird like cheeping and thought a bird had flew in and got trapped behind the guinea pig cage somehow - I slowly crept to the cage and was amazed that it was Iggy making this noise. :o

I wonder why Piggy's make such a chirpy birdlike sound?

I definitely don't hold the superstitious view (like some piggy owners on this site) that its a warning of impending death of another piggy.

I`m inclined to believe its for a physical or emotional need. A few of these needs have crossed my mind - thirsty piggy, hormones playing up, loneliness, in pain, warning of danger, a super happiness feeling, in pain, sadness....... If anyone can think of any more please let me know.

We need more information / ideas / suggestions from you to build up a picture of its meaning.

Your so so lucky. Treasure that moment not many people are as lucky as you. I wish i could hear it, maybe one day. xx

rosie was 5 and a half when she done it and she went to heaven 6 months later. she only every did it 3-6 times but it was beautiful though sad at the same time, it was like being spellbound when you hear it, it was a beautiful eerie sound. hoping you hear it soon sarsmccabe O0 yesterday rosie left us 3 years old and it just seems yesterday that we bought her and petal home. 0:) 0:) 0:) RIP sweet darlings sing like the angels amongst the clouds 0:) 0:) 0:) :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

The only time i've heard my boys singing was the night i split them up for fighting i think it was because they missed each other! :smitten:

ive heard my girls doing that but not lasting as long as the video.... i think they sound like baby chicks... why do they do it? dunno why do we sing? maybe they like it!

Well I've just lost a piggy but it was quite a few months ago that she sang. :-\ She seemed happy enough and was actually eating at the time she did it - don't know how she managed to make that noise and munch on hay at the same tiime. :o

My piggie Strawberry made this noise tonight, just like in the youtube video, but not as loud. I hope it doesn't mean she's ill or going to die- not that i'm really superstisious but the thought makes me want to cry!:0

what does it sound like? can anyone try to explain?
I've heard wheeking, calling, and like a sing song happy sound
like she's trying to talk to me but I don't know what the song
sounds like!
