As mentioned in a different thread, I've been syringe feeding one of our piggies regularly recently because of dental issues, and have noticed earlier this week that his cage mate keeps sneezing every so often. So, I called him over to have a look at him, and he had like a tiny bit of clear liquid come out of one of his nostrils. Otherwise, he seems okay in himself. He is still eating and lively as anything. His weight is down about 25g from what it was at the end of January, but I think that's still in the normal range for day-to-day fluctuations, right?

Last night, I was syringe-feeding the dental piggy again, and his cage mate sneezed another couple of times. So, I called him over to the side of the cage again, and there was a little splatter of blood coming out of the same nostril as before with a little bit of yellow/cloudy staining on the edges. I picked him up to give him a closer look and his breathing sounds okay, although he seems to make a bit of noise with his breathing when he eats sometimes.

Do you reckon it could be something trapped in his nose or the start of a URI brewing? Either way, should I be prepping for another vet visit this week? I might as well ask if I can move in at this rate :)

Hi! It is very likely something stuck in the nose from hay dust or a bit of a hay stalk. See a vet if it is going by tomorrow as that means that whatever it is has not been able to be sneezed out.

As an update, we took Pugwall to the vets. As well as one of his nostrils having a bit of discharge, his eye on the same side has started to become a bit sticky. The vet checked him over and - when pressing down lightly on the gap between his eye and the affected nostril, he squeaked pretty loudly and looked in quite a bit of discomfort. She diagnosed an infection in his tear duct/nasal passage, and has given us two-week courses of both doggy metacam and sulfatrim.

Pugwall has previously had a bad reaction to Baytril (e.g. off his food, lost weight, stopped pooping). Is there anything we need to watch out for where sulfatrim is concerned, in terms of side effects?

Hi! Any antibiotic can cause a negative reaction, but baytril is the one that is most widely used/prescribed and that seems to impact on the guts most often (although still only in a minority of cases).
Poo soup from a healthy companion is more effective if the poos you soak in water before syringing have literally just dropped from the bum than probiotics. This mimics natural behaviour by the way.

All the best!
