My guinea pig Nugget has been sneezing the past 2 days. I'm not sure his exact age because I got him from Petsmart but he is very tiny. He mainly sneezes when he is eating or drinking. I looked this up and everything is saying he has an URI but, he does not have any of the symptoms besides sneezing. His nose is dry, his eyes are not irritated and his sneezes do not sounds terrible. It almost sounds like it is just a short blow from his nose. I have looked up a guinea pig sneezing to confirm that his sneezes were sneezes and they did not sound the same. So I was just wondering if anyone has experienced this. We have replaced his hay and he has continues to sneeze. It is not consistent. He will sneeze for 2 seconds then won't sneeze for another 1-2 hours. Anyone know anything that could be the explanation?

Hello and welcome.

Guinea pigs have very narrow airways and often if they eat too fast it will cause them to cough and sneeze. Dust/hay particles will often cause it as well as being on wood shavings as bedding.

If you are concerned, then you should see a vet. We obviously don’t have hands on your piggy or hear the sneezes and a vet is the only one who can rule out a uri.

I agree with piggies&buns, if you have concerns especially if the sneezes are happening regularly then I would get him checked over. Best to be safe

I had this when I got my last rescue pig but it suddenly stopped before I could book an appointment, I assumed it was just her settling in
Book an appointment if you're concerned :)
