So I have two young guinea pigs. And I do frequent cleans with dustpan on fleece liner. However I know I’m not supposed to bathe them at such a young age. What can I do to get rid of the smell that’s on them a little bit?
Cleaning the cage once a week fully. And three spot cleans daily. The cage doesn’t smell bad. But like when I come close to my guineas and take a whiff it’s like a mixture of smells
There shouldn’t really be any smells. I have a boar pair and they don’t smell Themselves - it’s only when they start scent marking which can cause a bit of an aroma!
With fleece, if depends on your absorbent layer and how good it is. Fleece can need changing twice a week rather than once a week (still with daily spot cleans).
It can also help to use pee pads in high traffic areas (such as under their hideys) as they can be removed more regularly
How are you serving their hay? They will also pee in their hay while they eat so if you are using a tray or loose piles, then that can be a cause of a smell if they aren’t changed out often enough. Serving soft hay in trays or loose piles is preferable to using hay racks (racks should be used only for spiky hay which poses more of a hay poke risk) but if you line it with a Disposable bedding or newspaper, then once a day you can throw it out and fully replace it.
The other thing is boars will scent mark their territory and it will cause a smell. Over cleaning can cause them to scent Mark more and therefore when you do a cage clean, it can be best to only clean half the cage at a time as that way, the cage still smells of them somewhat and they feel less need to mark again.
Bathing shouldn’t really be done (its not about their age) unless there is a medical need to.
