Hello
My Guinea pig, Lily, suddenly started chattering her teeth after I forgot to open one of the gates inside the cage, which is normal for her. However, after I opened the gate and she went through, her chattering got more intense and she suddenly started shaking and then whining. A few days prior she jumped off of her bed when I was still holding it standing up and fell to the floor. Luckily she was still able to walk and was eating and drinking fine. I am currently booking a vet appointment to check if she got hurt from the fall, but this shaking and loud chattering is new behavior that I have never seen before, and really scared me. Is this related to her fall or something else? Thank you for your time!

I’m afraid we can’t know but checking out any pain or medical angle needs to come first before any behavioural issue, particularly after a fall from such a height

I hope she is ok

You have seen unusual behaviour and she has had a big fall... and they don't land well unfortunately, they're not like cats or dogs. It's v important to see a vet for a hands-on examination as you can't know whether this behaviour is down to a physical issue (fractured limb, swollen joint, swelling or bleeding internally) or a mental one like psychological shock. Other poster's have had piggy accidents like this and been lucky - some less so. But some of the physical issues can be addressed or at least treated with painkiller while she heals. Unfortunately they are prone to jumping blindly when they panic and their eyesight isn't so good so they can't judge that the bed - which had been on the floor presumably - is now in the air. But tbh even if she realised she might have jumped anyway...

How is your other piggy reacting to her? And how are they interacting together... any difference? Sometimes when one pig feels poorly the other will 'look after' them in a way that seems a bit unusual.

Don't beat yourself up too much about the accident because we've all done something that we kick ourselves for. The important thing is to try and pick up the pieces in a way that is best for her. Keep us updated about the outcome of that vet appt 💕

lily is actually pretty aggressive towards her cage mate. Usually they don’t sit too far away from each other but now they are at opposite sides of the cage. Lily nips and chatters her teeth whenever her cage mate, Luna, comes close and Luna just a runs away. Normally it’s the other way around, but Luna seems fine with it for now. Lily is moving around and eating and drinking well, but her belly seems a bit swollen and she whines whenever I or something touches it, so she probably got hurt there :(. We are trying to get a vet appointment asap!
