Hi everyone,

Today one of my piggies has given us a scare. He was laying down as usual but he would roll onto his back but it didn't seem intentional at all and he seemed to be really trying to stay upright. He did this several times a few minutes apart. He would always roll to the same side and his back end twisted a bit when he was walking also to the same side (not like a popcorn unfortunately). He was keen to be offered food but didn't eat it and he seemed uncomfortable. He was not wary of moving whilst this was happening. We managed to get an appointment for 2 hours after this began but an hour later he began eating again and stopped the rolling.

By the time he got to the vets he appeared basically the picture of health except he was more well behaved than I expected although this may have been fear.

The vet checked his ears for mites, his teeth as far as possible, said his coat was good and that he was in good condition, his bladder didn't feel particularly full or thick, she moved his limbs around and massaged him and watched him walk, no indication of pain anywhere.

Given that he seemed fine, they advised to monitor him very very closely for now because they couldn't justify the risk of sedation for an X ray when he seems good at the moment, especially when they didn't necessarily expect to find any bladder stones/teeth issues etc.

The vet thinks the issue was most likely caused by pain although they don't know where but said it could potentially have been something neurological.

Since returning home, he has been much more like his normal self and eating as usual too. He also seems more comfortable.

Has anyone seen anything like this? If so what was the cause? Thanks so much!

Hey!
I’ve never seen anything like this before, only ever in dogs which is due to something neurological normally. One of my piggies, if she there is a new bed in the enclosure or she is having floor time will occasionally popcorn so hard that she rolls onto her back and then panics. I don’t love when she does this because guinea pigs are not designed to lie on there backs😂 but I know that’s just her getting over excited.
Has the piggie eaten anything in the garden that could be toxic? They can always do some conscious x rays too if you ask your vet, if your worried about sedation. We popped my piggie in a box for her x rays and she sat there still luckily. They can do an ultrasound too to check the kidneys, bladder etc.
Hope someone with better knowledge comes along soon to help you as I have never experienced this before xx

Thank you so much for your reply! Aww your piggy sounds adorable 🥰 Nova is a very energetic (chaotic 😂) piggy so I did wonder if he could have sprinted into something and gotten concussed.. I have no idea if his symptoms really match that though.

We don't have a garden so he won't have picked up anything there but maybe something dodgy could have been caught up in their hay.. the hay they have does usually seem good though! He has just started eating pea flakes but I don't see why that would have caused it!

That's a good idea about the box, I wonder if that's something my vet would consider. Thankfully he hasn't done anything weird since returning from the vets. Really hoping this is one of those bizarre things that never comes up again 🤞🤞🤞
