Hello! My guinea pigs have been pooping weird shapes lately, either very small or oval with a small tip. They finished antibiotics at the beginning of the month and it started after that. Should I be concerned? Color looks fine for some, some are soft, some are drier. Pictures will be posted below. Also this is my first time posting so if I am doing it wrong I am very sorry!

They are fed oxbrow pellets, timothy hay, and green veggies. I am going to stop the veggies to see if that helps. They have unlimited access to hay and water. They have a fleece bedding combo. Juliet is 3 and a texel and Josie will be one in two days and is an Abyssinian

It looks like it be a gut disturbance. Antibiotics can cause that. It’s recommended that piggies on antibiotics are given probiotics (BeneBac given you are in the US), as it can help restore gut bacteria and help them feel better.

Definitely stop giving them veg until poops normalise and then for a further 24 hours after. When you do reintroduce veg, do so slowly so the gut can ease back into veg slowly. You can give a probiotic now to see if that helps. Ensure they get lots of hay and you can also weigh them more regularly (switch from routine weekly weight checks and instead weigh them daily) so you can be sure they are definitely eating enough. If poops don’t normalise after a couple of days off veg, then please see a vet.

Hi!

It is just a very minor gut disturbance, which easily happen when an antibiotic is also affecting the digestive gut microbiome. The problem will disappear on its own once the antibiotic has worn off some days after the course has finished. Please switch from the normal once weekly weigh-in to weighing daily at the same time in order to monitor the food intake in any ill piggy/piggy on antibiotics or gut meds so you know when further help is needed.

I would recommend to leave out the next veg meal and feed a little more pellets instead but be prepared that the impact of the antibiotic may continue for some more days. However, the impact is still only very light, so please don't panic.
