Morning All. On the 21st of December Squirrel started antibiotics for a suspected upper respiratory infection. I'm sorry I can't remember what it was he gave us but he said I didn't need to give him probiotics. He finished his course (it was quite long - about 3 weeks) and since then I have noticed that his poo is smelling quite strongly. I have not changed any of his diet, he has plenty of types of hay all day, only a measured small amount of pellets and two small portions of mixed veg - one morning and one evening (rather than just one bigger one). Stan, his companion and Dad is fine, no problem at all. Do you think I need to give Squirrel probiotic ? I have it in my medical emergency box but didn't want to assume as I am too new at this to know if it's the right thing to do. He is eating really well, very lively and weight stable and other than his poop smelling I haven't noticed anything else apart from occasionally dragging his bottom. It all looks clean and normal there and he is pooping fine. Thanks in advance.

Hi

I would recommend some probiotic but you can also try 'poo soup' (i.e. live healthy gut microbiome transfer from a companion not on antibiotics) - the latter is actually more effective if you make it absolutely fresh and a lot less gross than its name implies because the microbiome is perfectly tailored for a piggy gut and still live when it reaches the gut. Ideally the period between dropping, soaking and syringe should only be about 5 minutes for best efficiency since the digestive bacteria will perish quickly outside the gut.

Here is more information: Probiotics & Live Gut Microbiome Transfer ('Poo Soup'); Recovery Formula Foods And Vitamin C: Overview With Product Links and Transfer Recipe

All the best. I hope that this will do the trick.

Hi Wieke - firstly I do hope you have recovered and are now all mended. Secondly and no less important thank you so much for the great advice. Squirrel is a very placid little chappy and it will be no problem getting him to take it via syringe. I will try the poop soup first especially as Stan is super well - I am not sure if it will make any difference that they are related - Stan is Squirrel's Dad (probably not LOL). How soon do you think I will see a difference do you think?

Thank you so much it's very appreciated.

It doesn't matter whether the piggies are related or even living together; all that is needed is that the donor is healthy and that they are especially not on any antibiotic themselves.
If the transfer works, you should see a marked improvement within the following two days (keep in mind that it takes about a day for feed to pass from one end to the other and that piggies eat part of their poos for a second run through the gut, which adds another day).
Poo soup mimics natural 'bum digging' behaviour in recovering piggies where they steal healthy poos straight from the source to inoculate their own gut. It is therefore one of the few home cure tricks that has actually stood the test of time.

Thank you for your well wishes.
10 weeks after my fall and half hip replacement and with religious exercising and building up my leg muscles since the start of this year, I have just cracked walking 2 km with my outdoors rollator to get as far as my pharmacy and back. I have so far concentrated on my mobility and fitness (physical and mental) as much as possible as I will need everything I gain now for the gruelling coming months. I am doing as well on that front as can be and am way ahead of my class; it takes several months for such a weight bearing, crucial joint to get back fully to normal. ;)
Anyway, I am now facing my cancer treatment getting underway sooner than expected after the results of the biopsy have taken longer to come back than expected. I will know more after an appointment later this week where it will all be explained to me in detail.

Oh my word I didn't realise it was a break due to cancer, I'm so sorry - I just thought you'd had a fall and broken it. It sounds to me like you have a handle on it all and are preparing as best you can - it will be a challenge for sure, but I am also sure that on the days you need a cheer up and some support or just a bit of sympathy we will be here for you. Good luck with your appointment, I'll be sending positive vibes for you.

I have a bit of an ongoing blog in General Chat. Thanks for your support.
