So my guinea pig banana bread is about 6 years old (she's an oldy) and her eye has pink bulging sides on the right side. Lately there has been a little discharge from it as well. She's had a slight pink eye for about 2 years now and it hasn't seemed to bother her up until recently. It's been getting worse and enlarging this past week and she's been blinking a lot more. Most of the vets I know don't know much about this and she seems to be in discomfort! Does anyone know what could help?

Hi!

Can you please post a picture? Try the Attch files button under your next post for upload.

We can unfortunately not comment just from your description and sight unseen unless you want to start a free-for-all guessing game, which we prefer to avoid on here. Too much can go wrong with eyes unfortunately.

Sure! Here are 2 pics of her today. She's been eating and drinking happily I'm just afraid she's hiding her pain. I'm beginning to think she has a respiratory infection because she also has a runny nose on the same side as her pink eye. I've been cleaning her eyes a few times a day with warm water and clean cloth which seems to make her happier and more comfortable.

I would have her seen by the vet. It looks like it could be conjunctivitis (although I am not sure) but my late Enoch’s eye looked similar and he was diagnosed with conjunctivitis. He was prescribed a course of antibiotic eye drops that we had to administer several times a day for a week. You also want to rule out a uri as they can be fatal if left untreated

Hi!

The pink/purply bits are prolapsed tear glands which happens when the conjunctiva is infected/swollen. The gunk could be potentially a sign of an ulceration (infection) of the eye ball from a scratch from something stuck under the lid.

Please have him see by a vet; he may have conjunctivitis or something stuck under the eye lid that is badly irritating both the conjunctiva and scratching the eye surface where you cannot see it. It requires a hands-on examination as to what is exactly going on (and if ncessary removing anything wedged in) and will need antibacterial eye drops but treatment is pretty straight forward.

The vet I took her to suggests that I put her down! She's still eating and drinking fine and we feed her plenty of variety; I don't want to put her down since she does not seem to be nearly at that stage yet or in that severe of discomfort. I have been force feeding her if she under-eats or under-drinks along with cleaning her eyes 3 times a day and keeping her cage clean. I feel like I'm on my own at this point... Any recommendations on what I can do to comfort or help her recover meanwhile?

Did they suggest any treatment for her eye? I would have her seen by another vet. With eyes, treatment is the same for all animals. So, in theory, you should be able to get her seen by a general vet. Otherwise try from the link below. Hope she’s sorted soon.
