Hello, my 4 year old female piggy just had a 2 inch lipoma Removed on her nipple/underbelly. She was eating lettuce and some hay when I got her back for a little bit then stopped. She ate her droppings after this but I’m still worried. Should I give some critical care and syringe water? (She is in a travel carrier for a day to help healing and the water bottle placement is a little odd so she’s not used to the setup yet.) if something’s amiss I can’t leave my house there’s a ice storm and the vet is closed until Friday. Am I overreacting?

Please switch from routine weekly weight checks and instead make sure you weigh her every day while she is recovering. Hay is the most important part of the diet and you cannot judge intake by eye so weighing her is important. If she isn’t eating enough hay to maintain her weight then she must be syringe fed critical care.

Is she awake and recovered enough from the anaesthetic? You don’t want to syringe feed a sleepy piggy as they may aspirate.
Is she on pain killers?

Good luck I hope your piggy perks up after her operation and starts to eat for herself. If not then do start syringe feeding.

She’s awake and apparently ate at the vets before I picked her up. She’s definitely groggy and less active than usual. She had meloxicam in the morning and I’m assuming they gave her a sedative as well as anesthesia. I’ve started syringe feeding every two hours. It’s odd she stopped eating in her warmed carrier then I took her out to syringe feed and she started to eat hay and lettuce then stopped and is resting. This has happened twice. Is she just groggy? Or is her body shutting down?

Could you call the vets and ask their advice? It would give you peace of mind.
