please help! i took my guinea pig hazel to the vet yesterday and they said she was okay to come home.. they prescribed her meloxicam, metoclopramide, cisapride, and simethicone. but she's still not eating or pooping. :( I'm crying I'm so worried i dont know what to do.. i gave her a massage and i gave her crit care.. what else can i do?
oh, and the vet apparently didnt give me enough simethicone, so i am out of that even though i just got it yesterday. i called them but they never called me back and now they're closed, so i cant pick up more right now.
i have mylicon, is it okay to give it to her?

okay the vet called back and they said i didnt have to give her anymore simethicone so its okay! (they already gave her some when she was there overnight) and i just need to give her more crit care, so hopefully she will start pooping soon :) sorry! i dont know how to delete threads

Hi, sorry your piggy isn't eating etc. Did your vet tell you what is wrong, or just give you meds to treat the symptoms?

Don't worry about the simethicone, it would be unlikely to help anyway. More important is to ensure she has food in order to prevent gut stasis. If you have Critical Care, syringe feed her with that using a 1ml syringe, little and often. You can also use mushed up nuggets. There is a guide to syringe feeding in the sticky threads which may help you. I hope you can get her to eat again.

Best of luck to you and your piggy x

Weigh her daily so you can be sure you give her enough critical care - if she loses weight then she needs to be fed more often. When a piggy isnt eating anything for themselves, you are looking to feed in excess of 60ml (probably closer to 100ml) of critical care in a 24 hour period.

Poop output reflects food intake but it has a 1-2 day delay. So if she isnt pooping today then its because she didn't eat enough yesterday/the day before.

We dont actually recommend simethicone because it gathers gas into a large bubble which is fine for human babies but can make passing it more painful and harder for guinea pigs - their guts are different to ours.

Please do read all the guides linked in above as they give further detail on syringe feeding, bloat and GI stasis

I hope she is better soon

I hope she starts to feel better soon. You are doing great. Keep on helping her to eat and the poops should start appearing.
