Hi there,

Three days ago my 4 year old, Sparki, very abruptly stopped eating. Over the past month I had worried he was eating a little less, however his weight had remained 1.1kg. He went straight to the vet, however the vet couldn't find anything obviously wrong with him - Teeth are perfect, no pain on palpation, no respiratory distress, heart is fine, lymph nodes are fine, no bloat. An otherwise healthy guinea pig that has just stopped eating. He is now on pain relief, cisapride and antibiotics. We have been able to get him to eat about 40-50mls of critical care or emeraid each day, plus a few leaves of parsley or a little grass, but he has almost no desire to eat himself (tried all sorts of fruit, and all his favourite veggies). He is loosing weight, and only producing some very small poos strung together. He is having a x-ray tomorrow, but I'm not sure if it will find anything. Any suggestions as to what he may eat, or ideas anyone who has experienced something similar would be much appreciated.

Thanks heaps.

I’m so sorry to hear this.

As he is still losing weight, then he needs more critical care each day. The small stringy poops indicate a gut issue and reduced food intake.
Try to get 60ml into him (the actual amount needed will be 60-90ml per day).
Daily weight checks and plenty of syringe feeding, and offering grass and veggies to tempt his appetite - as an owner, these are very important things to do and just as important as the meds and the vets role in finding the cause.

I hope you can find out what is causing his issues.

Thank you,

X-ray didn't find anything wrong. We are trying our hardest to feed him more critical care, but he is going through a lot of ups and downs as to whether he will eat or not. He has fluids and is on stronger pain relief now and he seems a little happier.
