Hi everyone,

My 2 new boars (think they're brothers) seem to be getting on fine. Ralphie is the larger one and seems more dominant, but Choccie doesn't seem to mind. When I got them I pointed out to the rescue lady that Choccie has one eye shut and she hadn't noticed before but then when she looked at it she said that he didn't actually have an eye in there. I'm taking them to the vets next week to be checked over, but Ralphie keeps licking the 'missing' eye so I'm wondering if it's actually poorly. They were brought into the rescue by a lady that brought a male & female guinea about 18 months ago....and before she knew it she'd got about 50 running about together in the shed so they may well be interbred...bless them :( Is this a common occurance through interbreeding?

Also, Ralphie keeps jumping about as if he's being prodded...is this popcorning? Choccie just scurries everywhere and makes a sort of chattering noise and shivering, do you think this is cos he's a bit scared still? He also squeeks alot and follows Ralphie about when I go into their house. I'm being caucious not to approach him from his blind side so I don't frighten him even more

I might be worrying too much but I just want to make sure that I'm doing the best I can for my new boys :)

Any advice would be great!

Thanks
Lyndsay

How can the rescue later not have noticed his eye ? seems very strange to me as that is what you check on any pig that comes in to her rescue :-\

Hope its nothing too serious and are you sure he has no eye :)

Yes its called popcorning which means they are very happy little things ;D

Choccie seems like hes dominating to me as my dominating boars purr and rumble alot O0

birth defects can happen with interbred piggies. I still cant believe the rescue never noticed that terrible. Well i hope all goes ok at the vets for you.
xx

I know, as my OH noticed as soon as she handed Choccie to him. She fosters rabbits for the RSPCA but the guineas are nothing to do with the RSPCA, she just looks after them until they find homes. His fur is very dark brown on the side with no eye so she said she hadn't noticed cos of that!

He runs round like a piggie possessed when i go into their house, but soon settles down to eat hay so I'm hoping that's a good sign that he's getting used to me. :) he hasn't popcorned yet, but then I've only had them for 6 days so there's plenty of time :)
