Hello , my guinea pig has been making strange noises for the past week when she is sleeping and I am unsure what it means. I don’t know if she is having trouble breathing or the noises are nothing to worry about.

I’m afraid from your description alone we could not really hazard a guess. We don’t know anything about your piggy eg age, health, cage set up, any changes to bedding or weight gain or loss or changes to general condition .
As with any change you note in a piggy if it is different from how it has been then please seek a vet check and opinion.

I would attach a video of the noises so you could hear , but it won’t let me add a video.

Can you upload it to YouTube? If you can, you can then post the link on here and we can then watch it.
I have uploaded the noises that she is making when she is sleeping to YouTube here is the link to watch it :

I could be wrong, and can only recommend veterinary advice for something that you are worried about. Though it does sound similar to one of my boys when he occasionally gets hay/dust stuck in his nose as a result of burrowing head first in the hay piles (they have very narrow airways). He usually clears it after 5 minutes or so.

What bedding are you using?

If you are at all worried, there is absolutely no harm in a check up with the vet.

It's always worth running these things past a vet in daytime hours or they tend to worsen at weekends and after hours, IME!

Be sure to weigh your pig daily for the time being, and up your observations to see if this piggy is at the water bottle and hay as normal. Is she still running out as fast as usual when you crinkle a salad bag, open the fridge or pop her favourite veg in?

Any slowness to respond, increased time spent quietly sitting in one place and you need to be onto the vet right away today.

If she is active as usual, definitely munching hay and showing a quick and keen response with veg - if you are totally certain her behaviour is every bit as lively as usual - then be sure to start the daily weighing and obs.

As @Bradshaw Piggies says, it can be something as simple as some hay stuck up the nose - but a week is quite a while for it not to be sneezed out - or it could be an allergy to dusty hay, wood shavings or any manner of things.

Be aware also, that if the cause is environmental (like a reaction to something in the cage) this weakens the pig's immune system, leaving them vulnerable to more serious infections so it is vital to get on top of it.

The vet is always a good call anyway to put your mind at rest, i think.

I use pure fleece for the bedding with puppy padding under the fleece in areas they pee alot. I just noticed it last night and other than chilling in his hut a little bit more than usual he is perfectly okay. Even when he is in the hut he is poking his head out. And his cage mate isnt acting different. The cagemate madam chubbs actually is more active lately. I'm really confused. I'm planning on taking them to the vet mid month but if it's urgent I would take them right away. Slick only makes the noise at night while sleeping. When their awake I dont hear anything. His nose a a bit cold though I'm in Canada and its kind of cold here. Is that an issue?

I wouldn’t wait till middle of the month to have that checked out. It’s not urgent as in immediate but I also don’t think it should wait another two weeks.

As a side note, guinea pigs don’t sleep all night. They have ‘power naps’ and are still active.
