Hi I have brought some guinea pigs today and I am just wondering how long they could take to settle into their cage and get used to me and my sister.:{

Guineas are natural prey animals so it could take a while, just talk to you pig gently and at the moment I wouldn't handle that much. He will come around in time. :)

Thank you

Thanks. I have seen your answers in other threads and you must be a guinea pig master.:)

Haha thanks, Guinea Pig Slave more like! :D I learnt all I know here and it's thanks to the other members too. :) x

I have piggies who have lived with me for over a year & will only now take food from my hand. They are all different but with patience, love & time they will learn to trust you & your sister :)

My Guinea Pigs

Yes my guinea pigs are starting to settle into their new hutch and I can sometimes pick them up.

Mine are the same as Niki's but it took 3 months to get them to take from my hand. They still will not be stroked but we shall overcome that little problem next...

I just let them get on with it and didnt force them to do anything... They are starting to be chased and picked up now though although they are strong little things when they want to be...

I can pick mine up after stroking them for a while, but still won't feed from my hand.
I managed to get them to go down the hutch ramp by leaving a trail of carrot + hay (:

they love it down there!

Yes

Yeah I have just put mine down stairs and they love the grass. Luigi DSCF1279.webp always follows Guido DSCF1277.webp

Hi JTaylor2005 ... welcome to the forum.

Your piggies will take a while to settle into their new home. Don't try to pick them up too soon and when you do always approach them from the front so that they can see your hand and talk gently to them when doing so.

Basically, gently scoop them up under their belly from the front with one hand and then place your other hand over their back. Never grab them from behind or above because they will frighten them.

Every piggy has a different personality and if you have a confident pig, then that will help any others in the hutch to follow suit and be brave.

Patience will bring rewards and you will soon have both of them eating out of your hands and squeaking when they hear you coming to see and feed them.
