Hello! My young piggy, Ruby, has black nails. Since her birth (In the end of August), I’ve only cut her nails once. The first and last time I did so was in mid November. I went to the vet shortly after her birth to have a check up and asked how often should I cut her nails. The vet advised me not to do so, as guinea pigs needs their nails to dig — which they do often. I was a bit concerned with that because i figured their nails would curl up and they could hurt one another. So I cut all my piggies nails about a month ago to prevent that and everything seemed fine. Lately however, I realized that one of Ruby’s nails are a bit crooked, and I’m not sure if it bothers her. She doesn’t squeal in agony whenever I touch her paw with the crooked nail. Is this a concern or does this usually happen ?

I'm not sure what animal your vet was thinking of, but piggies need their nails trimming quite regularly :) frequency depends on the piggies, some of mine need them done every other week, some once a month. By the looks of it, your little ones nails have got a smidge long so they're making the toe twist a little, making it look crooked. Nothing that can't be fixed by trimming them :)

My guinea pig Carlos has like almost spider fingers. And they also don’t cause him discomfort. I usually cut his nails when they have their ‘spa day’. We give them baths and cut their nails

Nails will often grow crooked (and with older pigs will curl under and grow like corkscrews if they aren't regularly trimmed.) Pigs walking around on rocky, rough ground outdoors all the time might wear their nails down and not need cutting, but most pet guinea pigs are going to need regular trims!

My Reggie has what I call “Witchy fingers” 😂 his grow in all different directions! That reminds me, the boys are due for a trim
