I'm dreading all my baby pigs going off to their new home (although they're going to a really good place!), and it really bothers me to think of the mummies missing their babies! Are they going to pine for them? Will they be off their food?

How long will it take for them to forget that they had babies (if that's possible!)

I figure that in the wild, guinea pigs would have gotten pregnant again straight after giving birth, so would have new babies soon, so it would be normal for their babies to leave them. If the mothers are still with other pigs, then hopefully they'll be fine and won't be too sad.

I can't totally agree with you on that one, in the wild they only give birth in spring time ( altought I'm not totally sure about the season ) so they have 1 or 2 litters a year, no more becouse otherwise they don't have enought food to feed.

What they do have is the rest of the group to keep them company. So they don't need the company of their babies.

So if your guinea pigs have a mate they schould be ok, if they're alone they probably will get lonely.
Good luck! x>>

Oh, I never knew that sorry. I figured they'd just breed back to back, but I guess in the wild it's a lot different.

Guinea pig mums may remember having had babies, but they start pushing them away once they stop nursing. They will not recognise them if they happen to meet later again once the bond has been broken.

My own piggy mummy frankly looked rather relieved once the babies were gone and was throwing herself with gusto back into a life of all kinds of mischief and exploring. I didn't have the feeling that she was missing her babies at all!

My guinea pig Sukie got annoyed at her baby at 3-4 weeks because he was chasing her and trying to mount her a bit, so she was always giving out to him! Then he was separated of course, and she chewed the wire for about two days trying to get back to him, but then she got used to being with her friend Lola again and seemed to forget about her baby.

They will still sometimes chew the bars if they see each other (I keep them nearby) but I don't think it's because they remember each other as mother and son, I think it's just if she is in heat . . . rolleyes

i have a mother living with her daughter and the dad living with his two sons, i doubt they remeber who each other is as the boys are always grumbeling and swaying over their own mother and sister! crazy piggies!
