Hello! I’m a fairly new Guinea pig owner. I have two beautiful babies Oreo and Peanut Pig. They are around 7 months old and just went to the vet a week ago. They said she was healthy and everything sounded and looked great. One of them started making a really concerning noise. I’m new to this and don’t know as much as I wish I did about the ins and out of their noises. She ran up to me which was unusual she likes her space unless she hears her food being prepped haha. But I’m scared and don’t know if I should be running to the vet or not. Here’s a video for sound.

Hello! First of all your piggie is adorable! That sound seems fairly normal. I wouldn’t worry about it as long as he is eating, drinking, and acting normal.

How long has this been going on?
Guinea pigs have narrow airways so any hay dust etc can cause their airways to become irritated. They would normally sneeze and clear any irritation.
However, any breathing noises should be kept an eye on and checked out by a vet, particularly if any other symptoms occur.

It started today around an hour ago. It has ceased since then so hopefully just some hay dust like you said. If I hear it more through today and tomorrow would you say I should take her to the vet to be safe?

Hi!

Your boy sounds like he has a somewhat blocked nose. Please be aware that guinea pigs have very small and tiny airways and are also not much in the way of mouth breathers so you hear every little bit of obstruction quite audibly and dramatically. In most cases it is just bit of hay or bedding dust or pollen that has got into the nose when a piggy is hooting.

Contact your vet if the noise is not gone within a few hours (quite often by a good old sneeze to clear the nose), if it gets worse/recurs very frequently or if you notice further potential signs of a respiratory infection (URI). Guinea pigs don't get the kind of viral colds that we do; they get mainly bacterial infections.
