I just checked on him right now and he’s making weird faces. Like he has something stuck in his mouth. I know my old guinea pig would make these faces when she was having trouble eating, so it’s just making me worried. I’m hoping it will correct itself soon, maybe it’s just a piece of hay stuck in his back teeth? I checked his front teeth and it didn’t look like they were the problem, other than a little bit of crusty ness around his lips? Not much at all. He’s not making any noises or wheezing or anything, but like 2 weeks ago he was snoring in his sleep which made me want to take him to the vet, but he hasn’t made that noise since. I was planning to leave on a trip today, so hopefully it will correct itself, but if it doesn’t I might want to cancel and take him to the vet (if the guinea pig vet is even in today)

has anyone had this happen before? Or know what it might be? He points his head up and chews very slow, he’s not doing it too much, just a couple times since I’ve been looking at him. These were the best pictures I could get. I’m going to completely change the guinea pigs cages right now, and add new hay. Should I give him veggies? Or would that be a bad idea? Thanks.

Hi!

If is not over in a couple of hours, please see a vet in case something is stuck at the back of his mouth or wedged between his back teeth.

If he isn't wheezing or coughing then you could try giving him a small piece of 'wet' veg like cucumber and see if that helps.
I know piggies can sometimes get a build up of food around their back teeth so maybe that's the problem.

Thanks! Sorry I didn’t realize I got replies, it didn’t show up in my email. He seemed to stop, and started eating more hay, drinking water. I’ve left for my trip but my dads watching all my animals, I’ll ask him to make sure he’s fine tonight, thanks! :)

All the best for you boy! Lousy timing, as usual! :(

maybe you could ask your dad to weight your piggie daily at the same time each day.to monitor his weight, will give you an accurate idea if he is managing to eat enough hay/pellets to maintain his weight.hope you have a good break.

That’s a good idea, I’ll see if my dad can find the scale :) on an unrelated note, I’m thinking about buying some actual fleece liners from guinea dad. Right now I’m just using fleece blankets and towels. Should I start a new thread asking about that, or do you guys have any experience with guinea dad and liners in general? They are kind of expensive, so that’s the only thing that bothers me.

Good idea to start a new thread.
That way members who use fleece are more likely to see it and respond.
Glad your boy is better - hope that the improvement continues.
Enjoy your trip
