A couple of weeks ago, we woke up one morning and piggy was making a strange clicky noise. Contacted vet, and due to current times, had a call with them in the afternoon , by which time, she'd stopped making the noise. Vet said call again if it happens, but its prob an allergic reaction to something.

Fast forward to today, and the noise is back. Have sent the video to the vet and she's none the wiser. Doesn't want to medicate her as she'd eating fine.

Does anyone have any idea what might be going on? I can't upload the video here, but it's almost like a human tooth grinding noise. It's all the time so I'm pretty sure it's not a means of communication.

Thanks.

Hi!

Our forum is entirely running on voluntary member donations; a video upload facility would cost a lot more. You will need to upload the video somewhere else on a public setting and then copy it across.

Unfortunately we cannot comment just going by your words because our guesses can only ever be based on your perception - and this varies widely from person to person unfortunately.

What you can do is to hold your ear to your piggy's nose, throat and upper body (lungs). See whether you may be able to locate which part of the respiratory system it is coming from. If it is from the nose, then it is likely just a mild temporary obstruction. If the clicking is coming from the lungs, then your girl should be vet checked in case of a pneumonia.
Please keep in mind that guinea pig airways are very small and narrow, and they are not mouth breathers so you will hear any little obstruction somewhere in the airways as quite an alarming range of sounds.

Thanks for your help. Here's a link to the video of her breathing:

Just following up having soon that lots of other piggies are making this noise. She's still making it, and has been continuously for the last 48 hrs. I'm not sure what to do as the vet didn't know what the problem was over the phone. Do I find another vet? Or insist that current vet see's her? The vet said if it was a URTI then she'd be mroe ill by now so has ruled that out, and said it's most likely an irritant. I can't think what that would be though.

I would try and get her seen by the vet. Whereabouts are you located?

If lots of other piggies are making that noise it might be an irritant like your vet said. Did you switch their bedding or hay? Try a new perfume or cream? Those might be the cause. If this persists though, I think it would be a good idea to see another vet.

Sorry should have said, other guinea pigs on the forum. Her cage-mate is fine.

Vet saw Toffee this morning and has given her Baytril (0.25 twice a day). I've just given her second dose and will follow it up with Pro C in an hour or so. Do I also need to be syringe feeding her food too at this point? Or is it a case of keeping an eye on her to check she's still eating?

Switch to weighing her daily at the same time. If she is consistently losing weight then you will have to step in with syringe feeding. What did the vet say she may have? A URI?

Vet wasn't sure. Thought it could be URI but she looked and acted fine (apart from the crunchy breathing). We've had no new likely irritants and the breathing noise has been getting worse over the past week. One thing I mentioned to the vet is that if I hold her on my lap and lift her up so she's in a standing postition, the noise goes.
