Hello I am new to this forum and to the whole guinea pig life! I have two little guinea pigs, each less than a year old (although I don't know their exact age due to the fact I got them from the pet store... I know, I know, I am now a more educated individual, but I love them more than anything so I don't regret it, but won't do it again).

I got my first guinea pig, Milo, separately at one pet store and my second guinea pig about 3 months later, Mo-Mo, at a different pet store (like I said, more educated now.. sorry). However, I have noticed Milo has had respiratory problems ever since I bought him (so for about 5 months now). I had him checked by a vet about 3 weeks after getting him since he seemed to sneeze an abnormal amount and there was "mucus" coming out, which isn't normal for a guinea pig. The vet prescribed an antibiotic which seemed to get rid of the mucus and the sneezing so I stopped worrying about it. Every once in a while the mucus would come back but giving him extra vitamin C would make it disappear again.

Now, I am hard of hearing so I don't always hear little sounds unless they are really close up. So today, I was taking videos of Milo (you know, because they are adorable:):)) and I noticed in the video that if you get close, his breathing is more of a whistling/clicking noise rather than quiet like Mo-Mo's and now I'm really worried! He's had these "problems" for at least 5 months yet he seems like a completely normal and healthy piggie! He runs and jumps and eats a ton (he's about two pounds, has never gone down in weight and I weigh them about once a week, sometimes twice), has gorgeous fur, loves to cuddle and loves to rumble with Mo-Mo! What do you think the whistling/clicking is if there's no blockage like mucus or anything? Do you have any advice/does anyone else's piggie do this?

Thanks in advance!

Hi and welcome!

Please see a vet. Any ongoing respiratory problem should be checked to make sure that the lungs are not impacted. We cannot diagnose for you without a hands-on check with a stethoscope, nor are we qualified to. Clicking is not a sound you want to hear from a guinea pig.

Please check your home for irritants, hay dust etc. Irritants to Avoid Around Guinea Pigs
