Hello everyone,
This forum helped me immensely nearly 10 years ago when I got my first 2 pigs. Completely forgot my old account so we're starting fresh.
Just before Christmas eve we had to say goodbye to our singleton boar Alfie after months of illness.
Now that iv mostly dealt with the grief of his passing I'm starting to feel a more general gap in my life from having no pigs for first time in 10 years and without pets in general since I was a small child.
Complicating the matter is the fact that me and my other half have recently moved 100 miles to Norfolk and we are still very much settling in (looking for work etc.) so I have no idea how to find a rescue and as we don't drive not even sure if it's possible to adopt yet. Anyone else had this experience of not having pigs after a long time? Any tips on how to deal?

Apologies for my ramblings, just feeling a bit down and its hard for non pig people to understand so don't really have someone to talk to irl.

Thanks for reading.

I can’t help with your specific situation, but I just wanted to say :wel: (back) to the forum and sorry for your loss of Alfie

Hi and welcome back!

I am very sorry for your loss! You are welcome to post a tribute to Alfie in our Rainbow Bridge section if it feels right for you.

There has been a lot of change in the piggy world over the last decade. We have learned a lot more in understanding, diet and care as well as vet care.

You may find our New Owners guide collection very helpful to catch up. It specifically addresses all the most regularly asked questions and concerns as well as things that can help you minimise problems in the longer term. The guide collection is worth bookmarking and using as a resource as you go along. The guides format allows us to constantly update, unlike a book which is outdated rather quickly in these fast moving times!
Here is the link: Getting Started - New Owners' Most Helpful Guides

You can access our full and by now quite extensive guide collection on a wide range of topics via the shortcut on the top bar.

Sadly there are no good rescues near you. The East of England from Essex to Lincolnshire is unfortunately a bit of a desert when it comes to safe places for rehoming... :(
Here are the ones I know of closest to you:
Wood Green in Godmanchester (which is on our list of recommended rescues) and East Anglian Guinea Pig Rescue near Harleston/Diss (which has recently restarted and is run by a previous TPGF member) or the RSPCA West Suffolk in Bury St Edmunds, who sometimes have got guinea pigs, are your best bets of getting fully quarantined/vet cared and bonded piggies.

Hello and welcome. Sorry that you lost your last piggy but lovely to hear you’re thinking of getting more. I’m afraid I don’t know of any rescues near Norfolk.

Hello and welcome back
So sorry you lost your little Alfie x
I’m sorry you are feeling a bit down, I think a couple of new piggies would cheer you up no end x
Hope you can find those little somethings that is missing from your life atm soon

I got my piggies when I went away for uni and was suffering from loneliness. I didn't know it at the time but there was a massive piggie shaped hole in my heart and I understand it really is a horrible feeling when you have so much love to give but no piggies to give it to. I hope you find your furry soul mates soon.

Thanks for the detailed reply Wiebke! I remember you from the old days!
Great advice as always, it's easy to go "oh iv had guinea pigs for x-years i know what I'm doing" when knowledge is always improving. It's probably a good idea anyway as Alfie was a very unique piggy I need to remember pigs don't tend to be like he was.
Apologies if I was a bit dramatic think I was missing him a bit, and as you say the rescue situation is a bit of a problem especially us without a car! But we'll get there.
