Yesterday I noticed my little boy Leo (4 years old) wasn’t being himself and is starting to regurgitate everything he eats. I weighed him and he is the same weight but he looks like he’s shrunk. He was completely ignored his food yesterday but today he’s making an effort to eat and drink. He is regurgitating a brownish liquid? I really reckon it is something to do with his teeth but the vet has been no help at all. He hasn’t prescribed anything just told me to keep my eye on him. I’m so scared I don’t want to lose him he’s just not been himself at all. Can anyone suggest anything I can do to make it easier for him while I search for a specialised vet? I’m so scared.

Hi!

If you can, please travel to the Cat&Rabbit Care Clinic in Northampton; there you will find the most experienced guinea pig dentals vet in the country. He sees guinea pigs from all over the country as far as Edinborough and the Southwest and does about 15 piggy dentals each week - which is more than most vets do in their whole career. The trip has been a life-saver for many piggies whose local vets have been unable to deal with them.
Simon Maddock is a general vet, but one that specialises in cats, rabbits and guinea pigs so prices are not exorbitant. He also uses as little sedation as possible and does require a full GA only in very severe cases.

Make sure that any other vet checks the crucial teeth at the back for spurs but also for oral thrush.

Please step in with syringe feeding; if your piggy looks shrunk, then it has lost weight but may be developing some bloating as a result of the lack of food in recent days. Be VERY careful because of the swallowing problems.
Make an appointment as soon as possible.

Is he retching? This happens when a guinea pig is unable to swallow their saliva. It is often due to an issue with the oesophagus, whereby food blocks it. They can still breath okay, but obviously can't eat. Gut motility drugs can help.

I have been unable to find a vet. I am working so hard to find one and nothing is working. I am certain it is something to do with his teeth. He was on the mend yesterday and the day before but now he is just bringing up a clear liquid. So now I’m guessing he hasn’t actually been eating anything, just bringing it back up. Can someone please give me any advice on how to make this more comfortable for him? I’m struggling to find a vet and it breaks my heart to see him struggle.

Is there any chance you could get him up to Northampton to be seen by Simon or Kim Maddock at the Cat and Rabbit Care Clinic. They can carry out dental work without GA but it would also mean that they could have a good look in your piggy's mouth to see what is going on, without the risk of an anaesthetic. How much syringe food are you being able to get into him?
