Hello, I have a guinea pig with swollen eye and infection on tooth, the vet gave him 2 days in a row antibiotics and painkillers and is scheduled to surgery. I am anxious because he doesn t eat, is very weak and I think that maybe I can give her vitamins and antibiotics foar a few days and after she will be better to schedule operation. I fear that she will not support the surgery because she is so weak.

What do you say? I need an advice, the operation is a big one, it will remove her tooth, her eye....and she is so weak

I’m sorry to hear your piggy is unwell. If she is not eating you need to step in and syringe feed her. Little and often with an aim to get her to take 60ml in a 24 hour period. Of course you have to account for your sleeping time. Perhaps you could leave some in a bowl in her cage overnight.

You then weigh her every morning to see if she’s at least maintaining her weight. You don’t want losses.

When is the operation scheduled for?

Tomorrow and I don t know if I should postpone it...

Are you syringe feeding a recovery feed and carrying out daily weight checks? That is absolutely essential in piggy who isn’t eating. Giving just vitamins and probiotics will not help if she is not getting the essential fibre to keep her gut functioning.

If she is weak and not being fed then putting her through an anesthetic is a risk but it depends on how serious the infection has got as to whether she can wait

Please read the guides below as they explain the importance of syringe feeding

I hope she is ok
