Hi all,
I am a fairly new Guinea pig mum so this may be a complete overreaction! But yesterday morning when I came downstairs, one of my guinea pigs was just sat in a corner (picture attached.) When I walked past to open a window, he didn’t run or hide like he usually would.

I saw him in that corner several times during the day and he was also in it this morning! He is pooping as normal, eating as normal, I’m thinking it could just be a new space where he enjoys weeing because the towel underneath him is absolutely sodden! We had floor time last night and he was happy to run around etc.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Farah x

It may not be anything, if you’re in the uk with the heat we are experiencing at the moment, perhaps that area is just cooler, but do keep an eye on him. Weigh him regularly to ensure he is eating enough. hay is the largest part of their diet and you cannot gauge whether they are eating enough by eye. Veg and pellets are merely snacks so eating those does not mean a piggy is eating enough.

Is he getting wet being sat in the same area?

He may just enjoy a cooler space with more ventilation if you are in a place with a heat wave/very warm weather like we are currently experiencing especially in the Southern UK.
Hot Weather Management, Heat Strokes and Fly Strike

If the area is sodden, change the bedding or top with a fresh fleece to preven your boy lying in his own pee. Peeing corners as well as sleeping areas are whether piggies pee most.

He may just feel safe there with his back to the corner where nothing can creep up on him. A lot of animals naturally enjoy corners because they feel more secure there with their back protected. This may just be a spot he's found that he likes to lounge in (Leela for some reason always lays under the water bottle, even though it drips on her occasionally. It is just her spot that she has claimed for some reason!)

Yeah I am in the uk, that’s a very good point about the weather. I have changed fleece and towels today so he is not sitting in his wee - he does this a lot! I will keep an eye on him, thank you so much for your reply x

Have done a full change of fleece and bedding today, he still likes that corner for some strange reason but I think you’re right- he loves to sleep and pee in the same spot. Thank you for your reply x

They are funny little creatures aren’t they 😂 thank you so much for your reply, he seems to love that spot at the moment! That’s adorable about the water bottle! 😢 x

Please take the time to read up on our hot weather tips - we have the most comprehensive collection on what works, not just for the cage but also to keep the ambient temperature as low as possible.
