Hi all, I’m new to this forum but I’m just worried about my guinea pig. Earlier today after i got home my guinea pig, Chippy, was speaking and running around the cage, and sometimes when he gets excited he chews on the bars of his cage. He usually stops after a minute or so, but something spooked him today and I saw him kind of jerk back away from the bars, but i think his teeth got suck. I don’t really know fully what happened because it happened so fast, but i know that it really freaked him out, and i haven’t heard him eat or drink since it happened a few hours ago. I looked at his teeth and none of them got broken, but will he be okay? Is there anything i need to do? I was going to get him some veggies so i could see if he would eat those, but I’m worried he’s hurt

it would be a good idea to have a vet check him over. If he isn’t able to eat hay due to being in pain then he will need help with pain relief and being syringe fed

This can happen sometimes, a loud bang or excitement can be the cause. This happened to one of my piggies who broke his incisor. Usually you can see there is a missing tooth but sometimes the incisor(s) can get broken below the gum line. A vet check will tell if any incisors are wobbling and are just held in the gum by fleshy tissue. Obviously it’s quite painful if the tooth is wobbling around so weigh daily keeping a weight record and observe food intake, mushed pellets with a little warm water my help supplement his intake. As the teeth grow so quickly any broken tooth will grow it‘s way out within a couple of days and will keep growing until it meets the opposing incisor and then will naturally start to wear down.
The Guinea Pigs Lynx Website has an amazing page on broken incisors and grow they regrow back within weeks, here it is
