Hello, I have a problem with my guinea pig, I hope you can help me. Last week, my guinea pig had his eye and tooth removed because he had an infection, the vet gave him antibiotics for 6 days, but my guinea pig didn t eat and didn t drink nothing. I feed him with a syringe and I gave him water, he began to eat some hay, after some days he had diarhea and I gave him critical care but all the food was removed by diarhea. Now I give him mint tea.
What can I do? He wants to eat but every food I put in front of my piggie he doesn t eat.

Help me please!

Hello and welcome to the forum. I’m so sorry you piggy is unwell.

If you piggy is not eating for themselves you will need to continue to syringe feed them until they are able to. Also have they been given good amounts of pain medication? Maybe it’s pain that is stopping them eating. Or it could be the antibiotics. If you are worried it’s always a good idea to get the vet to check them over.

Weigh them every morning and if they lose weight then you need to feed them more that day. When I had a poorly piggy who was eating nothing for themselves I was giving them over 80ml of critical care every day.

I don’t think mint tea will help.

The health experts will be along in the morning with more advice. Good luck.

I’m sorry to hear this.

Please continue with the syringe feeding of fibre rich critical care or mushed pellets.
You will need to weigh him daily and feed as much critical care as necessary to keep his weight stable each day and to keep his gut functioning. That is a minimum of 60ml per day but he could need as much as 100ml per day.

Is he still on antibiotics and painkillers?

Please return to the vet about the diarrhoea - full liquid diarrhoea is considered an emergency

Please stop giving him mint tea - that is not going to do anything. It isnt the essential fibre that a guinea pigs digestive system needs and it will not sustain him.
