I noticed about an hour ago that my guinea pig has developed a completely white/blueish eye and has a small amount of white liquid is also coming out of his eye. Not sure as to what this is, although am sure it's not cataracts as this has developed suddenly and has no other known symptoms prior. No unusual behaviour, although I'm not sure if he has gone blind or, not as when I wave my hand around that eye he makes no response. He's nearly 4 years old so health problems are expected. I can't take him to the vets as I can't drive, and my mum cannot walk at the moment. I've asked my brother to pick up some eye drops from the local shop as that's all I can do at this point. Any suggestions on what's wrong with him, or any ways I can help? x

Don't mind the messy cage or the blurry photo ahaha.

It looks like he may have a hay poke although only a vet can diagnose and treat.
He will need to be seen by a vet. Eyes are considered urgent and require prompt treatment for a good recovery. Eyes do need to be seen by a vet within 24 hours. He will need a dye put into his eye to check the extent of the ulceration and remove any foreign objects which may still be inside. Then if it is hay poke, the appropriate antibiotic eye drop and pain killer prescribed.
Please dont put anything into his eye yourself without seeing a vet.

Hi

Please see a vet as soon as possible for an ulcerating (infected) eye injury. In the UK, eye injuries are treated as a priority and they are fitted in as much as possible.

Eye injuries can deteriorate very quickly but as examination/diagnosis, treatment and medication is the same as for cats and dogs, any decent general vet will do and the necessary medication is usually in stock (antibiotic eye drops or gel, lubricant/rehydrant and analgesic).

When it comes to eyes, the sooner you can step in with treatment comes before specialisation. Please take the first appointment you can hopefully get for tomorrow.

How Soon Should My Guinea Pig See A Vet? - A Quick Guide

It looks like it's painful for him, poor little chap. A vet visit asap to get something to treat it but also some pain relief. It does hurt when you get something in your eye 😢
They do produce a milky fluid from healthy eyes to clean themselves but it might be overproducing to try and help the eye heal. One of mine had a scratch from something - presumably a bit of hay or a grass seed that had got stuck - and the dye used by the vet to examine the eye was an alarming green colour! We got antibiotic eye gel and pain relief and the whole thing healed up very quick. Good luck little fellow x
PS Keep us updated as we'll be thinking of you 💕

Generally a sudden eye change like this is a traumatic injury- hay poked into the eye or something of that nature. Please see a vet as soon as you can for treatment, as it can mean the difference between the eye healing up or losing the eye. The good news is you don't need a vet with a ton of guinea pig experience for this, as the treatment of eye injuries is pretty much the same as a dog or cat, so the closest/cheapest/most available vet is just fine.

Hope your little boy’s appointment goes well and his eye is feeling much better soon :)

Most hay pokes are back to normal in a few days but it is essential to get your piggy seen by a vet as early as possible tomorrow.
