Hi there. Just a quick question for anyone that can help, I was giving all my guineas health checks today, nails, ivermectin, eyes, teeth etc , nipple cleaning on the girls. When I came to Ruby I was cleaning her and both of her teets have milk in? The milk is not sour. She can't possibly be pregnant, She lives with 10 other sows & 1 neutered boar and he's been neutered approximately 2 years. She's eating, drinking, fine in her self. I am so confused by this? Any one have any ideas or help? I will be giving the vets a call tomorrow just to give her a check, but I can't understand why she would have milk, her teets aren't warm/hot, no discomfort? Thankyou Xx

Hmmm. That’s interesting I know nothing about that. Freind of mine had a goat that had milk even though she never had even met another goat. They narrowed it down to her high calcium intake from alfalfa hay. Don’t take that as advice for you guinea pig 🙂

Please do see a vet.

How long have you had Ruby?
Is it the same sow you posted about last month regarding the same issue? (Thread below)

Can I ask why you are giving ivermectin? Do you have a vet diagnosed case of mites in your herd and therefore prescribed ivermectin? I not sure where the advice currently stands (one of our pregnancy experts would need to answer), but there used to be some controversy over whether ivermectin is safe in pregnant/potentially pregnant piggies, so a vet should always be consulted in such cases so the clinical need and risks can be considered, and dosages made accordingly (a vet should always be consulted anyway, ivermectin should not be used unless there is a diagnosed need).

If you do not have a diagnosed clinical need and active case, then Ivermectin should not be used preventatively. Low dosed pet shop products will not cure an active case of mites (they are not strong enough), and using it as a routine preventative can cause resistance thereby meaning an actual diagnosed case can be a lot harder to treat with prescribed meds.

I have also moved your thread to the care sections of the forum where it will receive special attention from the experts. The chat sections (where your post was originally made) are not monitored whereas the care sections are by those of us with specific badges in our signatures.

I've had Ruby since she was a baby. I will be seeing the vet today.

The reason for ivermectin is because my neutered boar went to the vets a few days ago and my vet advised to treat all with ivermectin as he was super itchy but has sensitive skin, but did say it could be the hay or sawdust as Teddy does seem to get sensitive skin.

& Thankyou
