Hello,
My guinea pig Valentine fell off my bed while I was grabbing some veggies, he never goes near the edge so I would have NEVER left him if I knew he was going to wander off and jump. He completely lost his front two teeth, bottom are still intact. It is a little bloody. In my emergency pack I do have syringe.
I know about mushing pellets but I was wondering is there anything special needed to be done with the hay? Tiny pieces of veggies or blended? Schedule for giving him water? how often to rinse his injury? is the salt water mixture a safe rinse?

Thank you.

I’m sorry to hear this.

If he cannot pick hay up himself then your syringing mushed pellets is replacing his hay intake. If he is not able to pick up and eat hay at all, then you are going to need to syringe feed around the clock.
Ensure you weigh him daily so you can be sure he is getting enough recovery feed via syringe and/or any hay he can eat independently. If he loses weight, then he needs to be fed more.

Veggies can be cut into thin strips and offered to him by hand to see if he can still eat them.

Please do also see a vet, not only to check his teeth, but to rule out any other internal injuries.

Hi and welcome

Please follow the advice in our very practical how-to syringe feeding guide link, which looks at all aspects of it and should hopefully answer all your questions.

I would second to please please see a vet to check the whole mouth, jaw area and check for other problems as your poor boy has obviously fallen off by accident or jumped off blindly. If just the incisors are affected, then they will grow back; can you check whether they are still wobbly in the gum? This would indicate a break further down the tooth. Incisors about 1 1/2 inches long; they run along the upper and lower jaw to roots just in front of the molar grinding teeth at the back of the mouth and because of their length are prone to snapping at any point, not just the visible tips.
