Hi, today I noticed my pig had his eye slightly closed and looked a little red/watery. Does anyone know what this is and how to treat it? I’ve given it a little once over with a damp cotton pad, and now reading into all the things it could be is really worrying me.

Hi and welcome

Please see a vet as soon as you can first thing tomorrow for a potential eye injury or conjunctivitis; because injuries can deteriorate very quickly and the damage can be much more extensive than visible (vets check with UV light), eye problems are considered a priority issue in the UK. The sooner seen and treated, the quicker and more problem-free the recovery; thankfully, unless the damage is really bad, happens in most cases.

Eye treatment and medication (i.e. antibiotic eye drops/gel and often a lubricant of some sort and/or a painkiller depending on the examination results) are the same for all pet species, so any decent general vet can deal with it; you do not need to wait for days to be seen by an exotics vets. It is more important to be seen as soon as you can with an eye problem!

All the best.
