So recently we went on holiday and switched from fleece to hay bedding for a week so the person taking care of the guinea pigs didn’t have to spot clean. But ever since we’ve got back we’ve noticed that one of our guinea pigs eye is watering excessively and sometimes squinting. We have tried looking to see if there’s anything but his eye but can’t see anything. Do you guys recommend taking him to the vet for a health check? Also we have a beaphar eye gel with vitamin a, which is a sterile liquid gel to smooth and relieve dry and irritated eyes, so do you guys recommend applying that too?

Please do take him to a vet - eyes are considered as urgent and should be seen within 24 hours.
He may have a hay poke which is a common injury - although only a vet can confirm. Its either that hay has poked his eye momentarily or that there is something still caught under the eyelid but its not necessarily something you can see yourself, only a vet with dyes and equipment can check properly (one of my piggies once had a 1cm grass seed stuck under his eyelid and every time he blinked it would have caused more pain and scratched the eye further but other than squinting and watering, there was no way of me being able to see the grass seed itself).

Please dont put anything in the eye yourself. If it is a hay poke, then he will likely be prescribed antibiotic eyedrops and pain killers. A lubricant can also be used but its always best to have the vet to check your piggy over first.
