My boar has been fine over the UK heatwave that's just finished but I've just started to notice that he's not being doing as many poops as usual.

I checked his bum and a few days ago there was some poop stuck in it so I cleaned it out and have been checking every day since but everything seems clean and normal.

From then on, he's been doing a mix of relatively normal poos but some look teardrop shaped/smaller and they're less frequent than I'd expect. He did more poops in his cage last night however after I cleaned him out today he's done probably about 1 teardrop one, which he ate after a few moments.

He's been eating normally (polishing off all of his veg and eating hay) and he's been behaving normally (wandering around the kitchen on his free roam and harassing us for treats!)

The only other thing I've noticed that's a bit off as well as his poos is that he seems to be avoiding the hidey section in his cage, which he usually chills out in 60% of his 'relaxed' time - the other 40% of that time he sits in a hidey that's outside his cage. For the past day or so, he's just been sitting in the hidey outside his cage for more of the time. It's as if he's spooked by something in the hidey in his cage but there's nothing that could have/would cause that I'm pretty sure!

I really don't know what's wrong with him, if anything. I'm hoping he does some more poops overnight tonight but I was wondering if I could do anything to help him at home or if I should just take him to the vet? It's just confusing me as to why he's eating and acting normally but not pooping or sitting under his cage hidey.

Are you weighing him? Weight checks are the only way to know a piggy is eating enough hay. You cannot judge hay intake by eye - they can appear to be eating it but in reality their intake has dropped too low. Those routine weekly weight checks, switching to daily weight checks where there are health concerns, are the only way to know the actual hay intake. Hay being 80% of what they need to eat in a day.

Smaller poops can indicate a reduced hay intake.
Poop output is 1-2 days behind food intake so seeing reduced poops today means he hasn’t eaten enough up two days ago, and this is also why watching poop is unreliable (by the time you see reduced poops, the problem has already been going on for some time).

At this point in time, I would supplement with syringe feeds, start with daily weight checks and see what that tells you, and book a vet appointment . The effects of heat on him may not show immediately.
