New Born Pup
Hi,
My 1.5yr old guinea pig, Elphie, had really bad pneumonia about 2 months ago. She was on oxygen for 6 days and was taking antibiotics, pain medicine, and medicine for GI stasis. During this time she dropped from 1030g to 930g. She has since fully recovered from the pneumonia. She also doesn’t stop eating and and poops a lot, way more than her sister, Glinda. Despite the improvement she’s not maintaining her weight unless I give her critical care 2x a day and I started her on probiotic. I then had a family emergency and had to board her at a local Guinea pig rescue where both she and Glinda (who was completely fine) lost about 20-30g, which I imagine is due to stress at a new location. Glinda was quite chubby and is fine at her lower weight of ~1kg, but I am worried that Elphie is eating so much on her own, but still can’t seem to maintain her weight without critical care and she’s a bit thin (around 900g now). The exotics vet can’t find anything wrong except for the lower weight. It’s also been hard to get a urine sample to test because her bladder is small (2 Guinea pig savvy exotics vets have tried and failed). In addition to the critical care I have tried giving her extra pea flakes and mixing in orchard hay, which is more caloric, but I was wondering if anyone has had similar experience or any other suggestions.
Thanks!
