Our Guinea Pig started dragging her foot today. Does anyone know what could be wrong? I examined it and it seems fine. She did not squeal when I touched it. She is able to walk around but drags the right hind leg. She is eating and drinking but seems a little off today.

Please advise.

Take your pig to the vet asap! Sorry that I'm not more helpfull, but my hamster had this in both his back legs and only survived a short while after and I still wish that I'd gotton him sorted at the vets.

Maybe it's broken? But to be safe, take het to the vets. Get well soon little piggy! x

Hey stargrrrlclaire, what was wrong with your Hamsetr when he had this condition?

it was just old age I think? He only lived a week with it. He lived with my parents whilst I was living with my boyf, so I only saw him a couple of times with it. Everyone told me "He's happy enough, leave him be" and "He's just being lazy". He died on the 29th of March (the same day we got our first two piggies), and I still regret not taking him to the vets asap. Best of luck to you both x

I had exactly the same problem with Nemo my oldest guinea pig a few weeks ago - he was fine one day and dragging both his back legs the next. I took him to the vet who just gave him steroid and antibiotic injections but they made no difference. I had read that it was probably a lack of calcium on the the Peter Guerney guinea pig site and that 'Osteocare' liquid was the answer but I had trouble getting hold of some because all the chemists only sold the tablets. A chemist kindly ordered me some and I gave it to Nemo and I'm delighted to say that after a few days he was almost back to normal and now you would never be able to tell anything was wrong with him so I would definitely give the osteocare a try.

How old is your piggie? My sow started doing this with both back legs and it she had arthritis in her spine and back legs. I would take her to a vet asap. It could also be bumblefoot which is when the pad gets infected. Are there any cuts on your piggie's foot/pad or is it swollen? This condition can be painful.

piggy sore foot

i would take the piggy to the vet asap, it could be anything from lack of calcium, arthritis, bumblefoot, maybe a stroke, pinched nerve, sore back. hoping your piggy gets better real soonxx>>>xx>>>xx>>>
welcome to the forums from me and the girls in south oz. hoping you have fun, make lot's of friends and learn heaps.:rose:rose:rose
keep us posted on piggy. sending hugs and healing vibes your way:)p:)p

Yeah, I think my hamster either had a stroke or arthiritus! he was 3 when he died. I don't want you having the same guilty feelings that I STILL have over it. Choloe is right, it could be one of many things. Bumblefoot is lethal if left long enough. Best be on the safe side. x

My daughters guinea pig Cookie has a very similar condition. She stopped using her back legs and we took her to the vet who gave her a couple of anti biotic injections and gave us baydril to administer. This went on for about 2 weeks till I read the thing about the calcium. I have now been giving the piggie osteocare for 4 days (1ml twice a day) and have noticed very little difference. Can you tell me how long your GP took to start walking again as ours just doesn't seem to be responding to the osteocare at all and I don't know how long to give it to her?
Many thanks

It might not be the same things. It could be arthritis or a spinal problem. I took my piggie to the vets and she gave her a couple of steroid injections which made her feel more comfortable. She did not ever recover and passed away but this was probably due to old age (8 years old). I personally wouldn't continue too long with it because I think excess calcium can cause piggies other problems like bladder stones.
