my boy Blake is one and a half years old. and I will be the first to admit that when I first got my two boys benny and Blake they were stuck in a tiny hutch with no toys as I thought what I was doing was right (badly miss informed by people at pet shops). I know a lot more about guinea pigs now I research everyday and even have some females now also, both my boys and my girls have large cages that have been home made and I've bought so many different types of toys and hide's for them but I just don't understand Blake doesn't seem happy at all. he just sits in his hidey all day and only comes out for food water or hay when I get him out for floor time he just sits in a corner. I feel so badly like its my fault for his bad start in life but I'm trying so hard to make it up for but I just don't know what to do. is there anyone out there who has any ideas on how to get him to play with his cage mate or play with his toys or just make him happy/ or is it just a personality trait? if anyone out there can help me I would be extremely grateful

Does he sit facing a corner? Is his fur fluffed up at all? You need to get him checked by a vet as those are symptoms of pain, it could be that he is poorly :(

it is not your fault, piggies dont react like that if it makes sense. We have a really badly and I mean badly neglected piggy. Once she'd recovered she was fine behaviour wise

Has he always been like this? I agree with @Poppy'sMum I would get him checked over by the vet. Do you weigh him? Is he eating okay?

he doesn't have either of them symptoms and when he is on my lap he gives me kisses and little things like that but maybe he could be ill, do you know of any specific illnesses that could make him act this way as he has been like this for around 7 months or so, thanks for the help x

he has been this way for around 7 months and yes I weigh him regularly and there havnt been any changes in his weight or eating patterns. I think it will be a vet trip for mr blake as I would hate to think he could be ill or in pain, better to be safe than sorry. thanks for your help x

That is good news that he is eating okay and weight stable.

No squeaking when toileting? Does he live with one friend? Do they interact okay no signs of bullying?

I agree, it could be he is being bullied by the others. It's not normal behaviour & I would get him checked by a vet first just to set your mind at rest.

Ruling out an illness is a good idea. One of my pigs has chronic bladder issues, and I can always tell when she is not feeling well, as she hides all the time and is very subdued. When she is feeling well, she still spends some time in her pigloo but also comes out to check out what is going on outside and is a lot more engaged and interested in what is going on around her. Any illness can make pigs lethargic or subdued... I would be sure they test the urine for blood and leukocytes, as it's possible to have fairly low-grade bladder infections and some pigs are extremely obviously affected behaviorally.

Is he living on his own or with a friend? My experience is that solo piggies can be withdrawn because they are bored or lonely. I know I saw very noticeable behavioral changes when our pigs lost companions and had yet to meet a new one, with them being either anxious or withdrawn/subdued.

nope no squeaking when he's toileting, and his cage mate benny seems to follow him around a lot I'm not sure what that means though?
