I've had my guinea pig for about a month now, at first he had a little plastic hut to sit in which he never really did and then he got bigger so we got him a bigger plastic hut so he could have walls but he never goes in there either. Is it necessary for him to have a house if he never goes in it because it just takes up space?

Yes, he should always have a house of some type. It maybe that he is a confident piggy who likes to be where he can see whats going on but even confident piggies can sometimes get spooked and need a 'bolt hole' as it is natural behaviour for them to run and hide, not having somewhere to hide when they need to is very stressful.
He may prefer a different style of 'house'. Most piggies enjoy the bendy log type 'houses' which are open at both ends. :)
