Ive just been on ebay and noticed they sell guinea pig clothing! How does everyone feel about clothing guinea pigs?
Theres so many different views about clothing dogs that i was curious?

Totally against it, I have occasionaly popped a hat on one of my piggies heads for a couple of seconds but never no further

I personally don't like clothes for piggies, they are born wearing the right "clothes" - their hair. Altho' my lhasa does have a jumper for when he's clipped in the winter :)

I don't like it. Putting coats on animals in the winter ie greyhouds etc is one thing but dressing up and stressing them out for our own amusement I don't personally agree with. I love our guineas just the way they are.

Well, you asked for opinions, here is mine :) - Guineapig clothing is a way of getting money out of people who are silly enough to part with it. They don't need clothes, as a previous poster said, because they are born with their furry clothes...they are already adapted for the environment unlike us humans, and the clothes would be purely for our amusement or to cater for some strange type of maternal instinct. Guineapigs are not dolls to be dressed up, and whilst I can imagine children wanting to dress them up, I can't think that an adult should be entertaining the idea ?!

What worries me also about clothing for animals is that it underlines a trend in treating animals in the same way as humans; our pets do not have the same needs, the same behaviours or desires as we do, but by treating them as if they do have human needs people entirely misunderstand the animal. I've seen recently a DOG BUGGY ! designed to take the canine companion out in the manner of a baby. I saw someone using one and really wanted to say - THAT is a DOG, dogs run and get their fur and paws dirty, you are being cruel to it by not allowing it to walk and run and exhibit a dog's normal behaviour. Surely our pets have a right to be treated in way that is most beneficial and natural to them, and showing an understanding of their true guineapig requirements (rather than a perceived need for clothing!) would do less damage to them.

It's sick, if people want to dress animals (with fur) up then have a baby! Tis all I have to say on the matter! :x :(|)

I think clothing might be suitable in certain situations, like skinny pigs in the winter etc, but generally no I dont think I would do it...

jsut out of interest.....I cant find any links to Guinea pig clothing on Ebay......I would like to see the pics...just outta curiosity. ;)

out of interest why is it sick? babies as discussed are quite a long term commitment and even then i would suggest dressing them up in costumes is a bit off, so maybe a doll might be a better option! I have opinions on the type of people who dress up animals, which i'm not going to post (so you'll have to guess what they are) anyway thats not whats really behind the question lincolnsmommy has asked. Does it harm the animal? If it distresses or hurts the animal then i would say don't do it. if not then unless anyone can give me a very good reason why, i'd say it was upto you.

Yes it does harm them. It's in their nature to wriggle out of something that they find restricting. They could seriously injure themselves trying to wriggle out, much like they would a harness and leash.

Animals have fur, in my opinion they are not play things to dress up. I think the likes of Pets at Home are exploting customers and animals with pathetic dresses to dress dogs up in! Whats that all about? It's stupid! I understand the likes of Emma's dog Chance needs a jacket on when he goes out because he has less hair than other dogs and I am fine with that but dressing them up in outfits is not giving the animal any respect.

Certain fabrics they could get their claws stuck in it and rip it off. I have known certain websites to sell nappies for rodents which is quite bizarre in itself.

Animals aren't play things and I think that dressing them in clothes isn't giving them any respect whatsoever. It's something I feel very strongly about.

I don't like the idea of dressing any animal up unless it is for warmth etc. Sure, coats for dogs which need them are fine, but otherwise clothes are pointless.

They look gorgeous without clothes and I don't see how they make them any cuter. Also, there is just no reason to at all so I don't understand why someone would want to. It's quite possibly cruel as well, I imagine that most clothes would restrict them meaning that it would be difficult for them to do normal piggy things.

thanks Daftscotslass i didn't realised it harmed them, should have done though coz i knew about the harnesses!.... as i said if it harms them don't do it!

couldn't agree more

well i think what i wanted to say has already been said several times, they could get the clothing court on something and really hurt themselves 8...

personally, i dont agree with it. Animals are not toys to dress up on a whim

Personally i'd never do it, i can't think of anything more daft. Looks stupid most of the time too.

I don't think you should dress up any animal - other than a winter coat for a dog if they require it. It stresses animals out as they don't want to have clothes on - if you want to dress something up get a baby or a doll!

I dont want to make any enimys, but i dress my chihuahua she has very short hair and if its very sunny she can get sunburn and in the winter obviously she has a coat on.. If the animal isnt snarling and wriggling about trying to get them off then i dont really see the problem :-s Clothes for guinneas is a little bit far though i think....!

I would hate a baby lol! i dont dress her to mother her its usually for practical reasons but I did get a halloween costume :-| x sorryy!!

Aww thanks for mentioning my boy, yes Shar-Peis have only one layer of hair, no undercoat to keep him warm and getting wet can cause sore wrinkles.

Guinea Pigs should not be put in clothes. Not all piggies are hairy, are they Kanika/Doris? But I dont put clothes on them either. Kanika has wore a sock jumper before I made for her but this was to soothe and stop her from itching her back, Capy(RIP) was the worst...

She used to cut her neck like crazy. It was suggested to use a Sock jumper...
capy72.jpg

but I found it restrictive on her and she would get a leg out of the holes i made for her and be wearing it like a skirt so I stopped using them. My friend had a Skinny boar called Hairy and she used to put kitten nail caps on him, if I have any issues with itching I think thats a less traumatic(sp?) than a jumper.

For practicalilty/health reasons and the animal doesn't mind then I see no problem with that - I'm really talking about the dressing-up clothes that serve no purpose other than to shame your animal! Their street cred will go way down wearing some pink jumper!

They sell dog buggies in pets at home and I know someone on a dog forum that recently bought a dog buggy for her dog that had had an operation on its leg and she wanted to take it with her on holiday to the Lake District in her caravan so the dog buggy was great for enabling her to take her dog - so they can be useful for sick dogs or old dogs.:)

I personally see no point in dressing an animal, The worst thing I've seen is a lovely dog wearing a nappy no less because it was in heat, you could see humiliation in its eyes

This is clearly a sensitive issue but I do not have a problem with dogs wearing jumpers in the winter if they are outdoors and are short haired or skinney. I would pop a hat on one of my piggies for a sec for a funny piture but no more.

Sexy ?? That is more than bizarre, that is emotionally unhealthy. inbreeding

ROFL sorry it made me laugh! Imagine sticking that on a pig! Sexy....yeah right! ;)
