My guinea pig Pumpkin went to the vets on Friday for a popping noise, though currently sounds more like clicking noise. I took her quickly assuming a URI. Vet, who is guinea pig savvy thought it was coming from her throat, and maybe she had injured it, she said it sounded like salvia . Her chest was clear She has been on metacam once a day since then. She sounded worse when she came back from the vets on Friday but then a few hours later after the metacam significantly better. Come back this evening and found the noise is much definitely back. And I'm really quite worried. But the guinea pig savvy vet isn't open until the morning. She's still very much alert, wanting veggies, weight is the same. I'm hoping the metacam will help tonight, I've given her daily dose. She had blood in her wee a week ago too but that cleared up on its own. I'm quite worried something internal is going wrong.

Hi

If she is still alert and eating and her weight is stable, then this is not an emergency. Talk to your vet tomorrow.
Please be aware that the guinea pig airways are very narrow and small, so even the smallest obstruction can produce rather alarming noises as air is pushed past it.

Bloody wee is generally the sign of a starting bacterial urinary tract infection or a non-bacterial bladder infection. if th immune system is strong enough, it may not lead any further.

Thank you! I appreciate your reply. Her breathing sounds funny but she's as alert as anything. She has just launched herself out of the hay pile demanding snacks.

Please see a vet tomorrow.

The need to breathe comes before the need to drink and only thirdly the need to eat. As long as she is fully into her food, her breathing is not dangerously or even majorly impacted. It's very simple but helpful to know because it makes it easier for you to assess just how serious a respiratory issue is.

The flip side is that any serious respiratory infection really impacts on appetite and thirst; which is why stepping in with support feeding and watering is so important. ;)
