I'm sorry if this is in the wrong section, if so please move it for me.
I'm just interested to know what do people do with their piggies when they go away?
I live with my boyfriend and noone else and some of our family live some way away so we go away for the weekend every 8 weeks or so.
I currently have 12 rats and as they eat mix they dont need to be prepared food and given it like guinea pigs do. So I just have someone come in and check on them.

If I go away for longer than a weekend then my sister has my rats at hers.

What do people do with their piggies? Are their boarding homes around at all?

I dont currently have any but am researching and want to make sure ive thought of all situations as i know theyr a big responsibility.

Thanks

http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1490 there is a list here of some boarding places that members have used before :)

We have 8 boys, 6 of them are separated so it's pretty expensive for us to put them into boarding very often. If we are away for a week or more then we are lucky enough to have the brilliant Holiday Hutches about 30 mins away who I trust completely with my pigs :) If we nip back home to Cornwall for say, a long weekend, I have some wonderful in-laws who come in a couple of times a day to look after them and keep an eye on the house at the same time.

Thanks for this.
If people can just pop in then I can ask Boyfriends mom to pop in to feed them morning and night (she only lives 5 minutes away)
And if I go away for longer then either my sister can have them or I have found somewhere online that is specifically rodent boarding near me that I could look into.:)

you could always use a pet sitter who would come to your house and deal with your animals there it would just be a case of finding someone you trust your house and animals.

Well I did think about this, but Id rather just have my boyfriends mom pop in than a stranger do it.

I am slightly odd in that i take my girls with me when i am visiting my family. They are always happy enough and i take enough things from home so that they feel at home, and they enjoy the fact that they can go out in the run on the grass.

I dont think its odd at all!
I often take my rats away with me to the isle of wight and to the midlands to see my mom and dad.
I would take my guinea pigs but want sure how they took to travelling?
My rats get used to it, would piggies be the same?

think it depends on the amount of time you have to travel, my girls were fine but try and time it for not when they are most active, remember to keep the temperatures something approaching normal not too hot or cold. I give them chunks of cucumber to keep them hydrated, but i have very brave inquisitive guinea pigs. Also do not leave them in the car when you stop, i got funny looks when i took them in the toilet at the service station said no dogs nothing about guinea pigs.... I have also been known to take them out of the carrier and onto my knee when sitting in jams.

well its like ..2 hours to the isle of wight and 2 hour to the midlands. We dont leave the car anywhere, its a straight journey.
How afr have you travelled with them?
Yeah I give my rats cucumber aswell:)

about 2.5 hours to both sets of parents, but i have a hamster bladder!

Me, 4 rabbits and 4 pigs were stuck in 4hrs of traffic last time I went home grr. Would normally take 1.5hrs :D They all seemed fine though :D
