Hello!

I have a 3 1/2 year old guinea pig who went to the vet this last Thursday from blood in his urine. He’s dealt with bladder sludge for almost a year and now he’s formed a stone. He heading into surgery on Monday and I am terrified. I want him to be okay and trying to prepare myself. He’s healthy otherwise but I’m so scared.

While rechecking all of his food and snacks I realized that his food was made out of alfalfa meal and I feel so guilty I may have caused it. I know some Guinea pigs are predisposed but I’ve been feeling this to him for years. Will changing this food to a lower calcium Timothy based pellet can this help prevent another stone?

Have any advice for post op care, pre op, surgery itself or any stories you’d like to share as I navigate this nightmare?

If you are religious, please keep him in your prayers for a successful surgery and speedy recovery. I feel even worse that I’m in college so I won’t get to be with him. He’s such an amazing fun loving sassy boy and he deserves the world.

Thank you ❤️

Hello and welcome to the forum. I’m so sorry your piggy has a bladder stone. Sending them healing vibes.

Don’t worry about what you fed before. Just concentrate on feeding him bladder safe food from now on.

Here is the post op care guide.

Hope everything goes well on Monday for your little piggie🤞
I rinse all veggies with tap water to give an extra little bit of liquid as two of mine don’t drink very much, every little helps
