Hi all,

My guinea pig had surgery about 4 weeks ago on a tumour that the vet thought was an abscess. Once they opened up the lump on her rear, they obviously found out that it was a tumour, and so they simply closed it right back up again. We noticed that she was messing about with her scar for the first 2 weeks after the surgery, so we took her back to the vet, who cleaned it with a saline solution and said that there was no infection. The vet explained that she was simply licking the wound, not actually biting it. This time around, however, i feel like she is actually biting at it as it is starting to smell like old blood (not a pleasant scent at all!) We were prescribed Metacam (painkiller), and she does not seem to be in pain. Does anyone know why she is biting at it, and how to make her stop? We have scheduled a vet appointment for tuesday but would really like some answers before then...

Can I ask where you are located please? We may be able to suggest a cavy savy vet

It might be discomfort. When Donald has his abscess in his chin removed he opened it up twice so was popped back on metacam and I split it to give twice a day and that kept him comfortable until it healed over.
