I have a Male Rabbit and just got our new Member of the House Patch the Guinea Pig but wanted to know if they can Live together?

Also can Guinea Pigs live outside in a Rabbit Home? would it get too cold for her?

No they cannot live together under any circumstances! ;) It is very dangerous! It will lead to misery for both, and possible injury or death for the guinea pig. Rabbits have very powerful back legs so your guinea pig will be in danger of getting hurt or even killed if they got hit accidentally or even on purpose. Secondly they eat different food. Rabbit food can kill a guinea pig. :(

However, rabbits crave company of their own kind and guinea pigs do the same. So I reccommend getting a female rabbit to live with your male but get your male neutered and female spayed! Then get Patch a guinea pig friend. :) Good Luck with whatever you decide.

What a pity you didn't ask these questions before you got your pets - that way you would've known that guinea pigs must have a friend (another piggy one) to share their lives and you could have homed a bonded pair. They must eat guinea pig food as the vitamin and nutrient levels are very different from rabbit food and it can shorten life span if the wrong food is given. Guinea pigs need extra protection through the winter months - I always ask that they are housed indoors throughout the entire winter.

Rabbits also need company of their own kind, vaccinations and neutering/spaying.

Hopefully you can learn all you need to know through the forum and give your pets long and happy lives.

Welcome to the forum, I'm sure you will enjoy it!

Its ok they are not Living together we just wanted to know if they could or not.

Well she seems to be settled into her new home and want kind of toys are ok to put in her home?

With the bedding we have used Sawdust for her main home and hay for her bed is that ok?

Don't be too hard on her - this myth is still widespread and petshops frequently keep rabbits and guinea-pigs together, thus perpetuating the myth.

Rabbits and guinea-pigs do crave company of their own kind. Please get your bunny a bunny friend and Patch a guinea-pig friend.

Rabbit Rehome http://www.rabbitrehome.org.uk/search_form.asp is full of rabbits waiting for someone new to love them. There are lots of rescues on this forum who would be willing to help you get a friend for Patch.

My buck was a rescue rabbit and he is the most gentle-natured bunny (he was only 6-months-old when I got him). He came already neutered and the rescue helped with bonding him to my doe (they are now loved-up). They have also always answered any questions I have had about rabbit care.

I will always get rescue bunnies from now on, because then I don't have to worry about neutering them myself (the rescue does this for you), and they'll know of any health issues and what the bunny's temperament is like. Rescues will also do a bonding service for you with your other rabbit.

To answer your other question: if Patch was an outside guinea-pig when you got him, he can live outside IF he has a guinea-pig companion to snuggle up next to when the weather gets colder. Otherwise he will likely freeze to death as he will have nobody to keep him warm. Also, if possible, you would be better off putting your guinea-pigs' hutch in a shed during the winter months, just to give it that extra bit of protection from the cold. If he was an indoor piggie before you got him, you'll have to post again asking whether he'll be okay in time for winter (because I don't know).

Please don't use sawdust; it's a skin irritant and your guinea-pig is more likely to suffer from fungal infections which can be problematic to clear-up. More seriously, sawdust can release toxic gases when it becomes wet with pee, which can cause liver damage (this applies to your rabbit too, if you use sawdust for him). Also, sawdust can get into your guinea-pig's eyes causing irritation.

Old newspapers with hay on top work fine. There are bedding stickies on this forum which will give you more ideas.

i have to say I'm a rescue and i use shavings and have never had a problem with them...

for my own guineas (skinny pigs) i use fleece but i find shavings do hold more..

If you use shavings and your guinea pig does develop a running nose etc then i would try hay and newspaper ,,but each for their own xx

Do you mean woodshavings not sawdust. Sawdust is too fine for guinea pigs it will course irritable skin. Please please please dont put your guinea pig with your rabbit. Its a no no no. Even if a rabbit is small their back legs are still powerful. My friend had her rabbit with her guinea pig even though I told her not too. Her rabbit broke the guinea pigs back had to be pts. :o I have rabbits and guinea pigs but never put them together. They can see each other through the runs on the garden but can not get to each other. Piggys are best in pairs and also rabbits with their own kind. A guinea pig should be indoors for the winter they dont like the cold. Rabbits can be kept in a hutch in the garden but must be protected from the rain. All my rabbits and guinea pigs are in a shed in hutches and in the winter they have blenkets over the hutches in the night.

Shavings[not sawdust] should be fine with hay on top, don't forget guinea pigs and rabbits need lots of fresh hay to eat so top this up daily.

Yes when people say sawdust, they usually mean wood shavings. :) I have used wood shavings for 5 and a half years and my guinea pigs have had no problems! :(|)

I would advise you don't keep the rabbit and guinea pig together, ideally they need company of their own species. However as long as you make sure you give them lots of attention, and I mean LOADS of attention, then they should be OK if you are not able/willing to get companions.
